Default Trophy Jackalope WMU 150,151,152 HELP NEEDED

Hey Fellas. I normally would never do this, but with less than a week left in the season I'm getting desperate. I waited 15 years for this trophy tag and put in all kinds of time prepping and scouting for this hunt. Literally hundreds of hours and thousands of miles on both my Danners and my pick up truck. Searched every cactus patch, sage bush, sand dune and water hole in the entire area. Not one Jackalope spotted. I'm beginning to to think all the extra traffic on the base this year has possibly sent them all underground. Honestly at this point I'm not to concerned about the size of the rack or length of the whiskers, I'm just looking to put a decent Jackalope on the wall and some premium meat in the freezer for my Family. After all, they are all fairly unique, just hard to locate and kill some seasons. So as you can see, from what I've said, I've put in my time on this hunt. Still, nothing. I'm thinking I deserve more. If anyone has any solid leads that might be able to help me locate one of these critters and close the deal, please let me know. I've waited way too long, worked way too hard and already wasted way too much time in the field for the internet to let me down. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Dace

Haven't seen one up here like,forever- the quotas were opened up for those rich Germans that really love the mounts, and the place went to hell from there!
Time was, we had any amount of them, I made a pretty good living in those days , guiding moose hunters and in the early season then jackalope clients in the later season, just before freeze up.
That was back in the day though, my 26 year old son has never even seen one on the hoof up here!
I still get nervous when we are hunting partridge in the fall however, those things were worse than porcupines when it comes to bird dogs!!

I was told the subsistence hunters really hit them hard pre season, now the ones left aren't leaving their burrows during legal shooting hours. A friend's brothers wife's cousin saw a reefer full of monster jackelope parked in 151 in august, guaranteed true.

they are very nocturnal this time of year due to way to many predators
have to be out there just at sunset or just before sunrise

4 years priority, took a pic of this guy right before I harvested him.

12 pounds, scored in at 10.5 inches.
Got to keep looking bud, took me all season 4 days hunting a week to finally get within bow range of this guy.
Good luck!

I did have one in my crosshairs early in the season, then I realized it was a doe with young, so I held off.

Maybe there was a high winterkill over the past few years? Or maybe the feriginous hawks have learned to pick them up by the horns...

As others have stated they pretty much go straight nocturnal from mid October until right around Christmas time when they start getting back to their normal routine. I have seen quite a few around the sandhills in 150 but they seem to be localized there and zones 151 and 152 don't really seem to hold a lot of them for some reason. As you may well know most Jackalope are located in Southern Saskatchewan and many biologists believe the originated there, so your zones are on the very edge of their western range. Good luck to you and on a side note use the 1st and last few minutes of legal daylight to your full advantage which means you should have the best light gathering optics that money can buy.

Obviously a P&Y book animal!!!! What a beauty, best jacoyalope that I have ever seen. Back in sunny Sask., we were required to take them with a slingshot, as even pneuematic rifles would have cleaned them out too quickly. They tended to go nocturnal when the pressure overwhelmed them as a result of interprovincial and out of country trophy hunters. While I have not been back in a while, I would not expect to see one of that calibre. Well done!!!!

Used to have some crankers in this area, but with CWD and generous bag limits, we only ever see does now.

Default Tuff hunt

I heard our new Environmental Minister thinks these things are cute creatures and has been advised that the population is not in good shape with very few remaining n Alberta. Hope it does not go the way of the Grizz hunt.

Retailed Hawks are cleaning them up around home. I wish F&W would do something about this problem. Maybe we should put them on draw until the numbers are back up. Nothing like Jackalope stew on Christmas Eve. Santa stopped by last year for a bowl of it.

There was talk of supplemental tags opening up for antlerless Jackalope on the eastern slopes? I hope not as this will impact the numbers out there significantly. What do you guys use to call them, I have had success with a gunny sack of potatoes and a spruce bough.

Are you still allowed to use bait for these in Alberta?

I remember my grandad saving up fruitcake and old Hawaiian perogies soaked in WD-40 to use as jackalope bait when I was a kid.

I had read somewhere that Sustainable Resources had commissioned a group of biologists to do a count and that there were fewer then 400 of these remaining in Alberta outside of the National Parks. All hunting and targeted trapping of the Jackalope is prohibited in Alberta.

As Luckwell has stated; retailed hawks are death to Jackies. The retailed hawks pick em up, soar up 10000 ft. or so and drop them. Very few survive.

But all the Jackies do not survive!!!!!

I've also hear a retailed hawk in the mall is also a deadly thingy!!!!

Apparently the BODO preservation society in up in legs over a herd of feral jackalopes destroying archaeological sites. They would have been up in arms but these digs are gun free zones.

There is some controversy as to whether they are wild or feral.DNA testing has shown this group of Jackalopes has survived the ice age by migrating to pockets of global warming.
