In case anyone wants to bid...

20% buyers premium with no max. I guess if you can afford to spend millions of dollars on sports cards you can afford the BP.

Be nice if the family could provide a story behind this find too. Did someone have a corner store in which they sold these hockey cards and forgot about them? Where were they stored is another question to ask. In a damp basement is not a good storage location. Regardless when they are sold be interesting to see how many Gretzky rookie cards are in the boxes. Maybe 25, maybe nothing to the winner of the auction. How some people spend their money.

I say it is great if you have the money to invest or loose, to each their own how they go about it.

Will be interesting to see if it paid off.

That's pretty cool.

Don't really see what the big deal is either, even if they are off by half, or less, and there are only 12 Gretzky cards in there, at a low price of $150k for MT 9, they still make money. Not to mention the remaining 10,740 cards at an average $15/each....

I wonder how this will affect the price of Gretzky rookie cards? It will certainly affect the supply side of the equation.

Not that they would have near the value of a Gretzky rookie card but there would be a lot cards in there for some of the great players of that era. Collectors would be interested. A quick search shows.

If I was the buyer who paid 3.75 M$ last year, I would buy the entire lot and destroy them. His card is never going to retain any value with 25 more coming onto the market.

Good point. It is the scarcity of the card which generates the value. The auction house is in it for the money. The more hype they create about the auction, the more money they make.

Both my uncle and my cousin had Gretzky rookie cards.

My grandmother threw out the shoebox containing them when doing some house cleaning on the farm.

Partially correct, it's the scarcity of cards graded MT10 that generates the value. You can go on ebay right now and buy a Gretzky rookie card for a few grand, there are dozens of them. MT10 though, think there are 2 in the world. O-Pee-Chee used wires to cut the cards and often time the flat stock wasn't centered, so the card can be untouched, right of the factory floor, and skewed, frayed edges, only be an MT8. The chances there is an MT10 in their, while not impossible, is slim. There are likley several MT8 and MT9s though, which are still worth quite a bit.

I found one while cleaning the school storage room, we were allow to pick one thing from there after helping the janitor cleaning it . Then the teacher took it away the next day ….

I have 2 or 3 of them, but the nicest one might be a PSA 3. So not worth much. I did recently get my mcdavid dream card.
