Default Warning To All Outdoorsmen!!!

My wife’s boss went out snowmobiling yesterday with his son, a friend and his kid. He went missing yesterday afternoon. He was caught in an avalanche, they found his snowmobile, but he is still missing. Everyone PLEASE be extra careful out there!!

temps are warm and snow is volatile

we have know this for decades and it still happens

common sense starts at home before you go out

why does this happen year after year after year

similar to those who hike way up north without proper training, supplies or becons

it is indeed unfortunate but not surprising

we need your warning but I have lost friends BY TELLING THEM TO,STAY,HOME YOU IDIOT

and I feel so much better for having said so

they knew the risk and then they want me to pay for the funeral or help the family out, no thanks

am I cruel perhaps not and maybe I care way too much to keep quiet about their propensity to do really silly things

sad topic but in my opinion we need to do more BEFORE THEY GET TO THE FIELD OF DREAMS,

Hope it turns out well. Outdoor activities do have some risks, some more than others just take the proper precautions and enjoy the great outdoors.

That’s terrible stuff Ram. Fingers crossed that they find him well. I have been guilty of some risky maneuvers sledding. Risk is compounded with the spring riding. One of my brother in laws lost his best friend in an avalanche doing some of what I just described. That was the most profound eye opener that life could have provided. To watch the loved ones go through what they did as a result, nope; time to really start weighing out this risk thing.

I’ve often thought that there should be some sort of basic course a person has to take before being able to purchase trail passes and such. It wouldn’t curb it all by any means, maybe even none. Crap can and still will happen to the most experienced of riders no matter what. People will still be just that; people. Nature of the beast.

Sincerely hope there is a positive outcome.

Horrible story. I assume they didn't have beacons? That's how fast a day of fun can turn bad. Hopefully he was found.

We lost a friend to an avy 30 yrs ago. They all had beacons etc but he got pushed into a terrain trap and was too deep and gone by the time they dug him out. Avy gear & training is a must, we had the gear, not the training but got that the following year.

Sad to hear about your wife's co worker OP & a good reminder. I hope by some stroke of luck he is found off to the side and alive.

He is an experienced sledder and has a beacon supposedly. Not sure what happened at this point. I know the area he was riding and it is a bad canyon to be riding in at this time of year. One spring years ago we watched an avalanche take place in this area and man was it loud and you could feel the ground shake. Fingers crossed he’s ok!!

Man, that's tough to hear. Fingers crossed they can locate him and he's alive yet as I understand it, these avalanches are very unforgiving.. Wishing them all the luck possible.

I just took the ast1 course in valemount two weeks ago. It’s very informative and gives you the knowledge on what to look for and how to test the snow. The snowpack has air in it, but after 18 minutes, your breath has melted the snow and turned it to ice around your head and removed the oxygen supply. Everyone that rides mountains should take the course and have the gear. The course is for yours, and your riding partners safety. There’s always risk, but it needs to be managed by making informed decisions up there.

First off this is very unfortunate to hear about, and it happens far too frequently. I have to ask if this fellow also would have known the area like you do? Why do people take their kids into places like this? We have a family three doors down from us that lost their son a few years ago when he stopped, stepped off his sled and fell into a crevasse and died. As a parent I just can't understand taking my kids out to these areas.

Very sorry to hear.

Here's a link:
www.avalanche.ca

I know most people who sled and ski in the backcountry already know about the Avalanche Canada website, just thought I'd share it again just in case.

Again, sorry to hear this news.
