Default Looking to buy a new scope, any suggestions?

I'm looking to upgrade my scope in the next few months. Starting to do a little research on a few models. Redfield revolution, Zeiss terra, vortex viper, Burris, etc. I'm not too picky, looking to spend between $300-$500. Preferably in a 4-14x40. Thanks for any insight you might have.

A decent scope in that price range, maybe a little more is the Bushnell's RainGuard Elite 4200 series. But you may want to consider looking for a used scope in that price range.

In that range a Bushnell is a good choice or a used Leupold

I have a very nice bushnell 3200 and a Leupold on my wife's .204 and I got a smoking deal on the leoupold in the USA. Just mailed it here no problems.

A 4x12 x40 Vortex scope for $249 at WSS comes with a lifetime, no fault warranty. Can any other company step up and compete with that?

That's what I bought and so far liking it.
Regards,
Dave

I picked up a Vortex Viper, I went with a bit higher power (old eyes) 6.5x20x50 for varmint hunting, but in a 3x9 they should be in your price range. I have not used it a lot yet, but pretty happy with it so far.

Seen a Leupold VX2 4-12x40AO with LR duplex for sale in mint condition on CGN.

A Nikon would be another good buy in the power range you want.

Narrow down to 3 or 4 that you might like based on your budget. Head to your favorite store and line them up on the counter and take a look see through them for comparison. I did that recently, and surprisingly picked the least expensive of the 3. Picked the Redfield Rev over the Vortex Viper and Ziess Terra

If you can test them out outside preferably in poor or less than ideal lighting. Most optics look decent when lookingth rough them understore llighting. Then pick the one that you thinkis bbest.

Sightron! not sure if there in your price range but make a great scope.

Ziess, Bushnell would be my next choices then Leupold.

Trades I would interested in:
- Sightron rifle scopes, 4.5x14x42mm or 4x16x42mm
especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.

Bough the Viper this year, and so far so good. Hard to beat the warranty too. bring back 51% and your golden for a replacement. Fogging or any other issue.

I prefer the Vortex Viper 3-9x40. About $350 at Wholesale I believe. Vortex and Nikon shine over the rest in low light conditions.

Keep you eyes open for a good used one in the Optics section. I recently picked up a used Zeiss Conquest 3.5-14 x 44 for $600.00 shipped from a fellow member.

Contrary to what most look for, glass that gathers light for low light conditions, does not attract me. For me, tracking ability is foremost. Meaning that if I dial the elevation turret up for 5 MOA, that is what I expect. When I dial it back to it's initial setting, I want it's POI to be back exactly where it started. I want a scope to have duals adjustable to where my zero return is at. I prefer one that doesn't require a tiny Allen key to do so. I want a scope who's reticle doesn't look like it was drawn with crayons.

Default Hunting or shooting paper?

If you cant see through it ,when your trying to shoot a six pointer ,makes no difference what the reticle looks like. For that matter ,if it returns to zero or not.I think that's what the OP is asking about as it sounds like he is a hunter.

Not a single scope that I have used hasn't provided me enough clarity to hunt within allowable shooting time. Many of them that do provide adequate clarity haven't tracked nor held zero. What is the point of seeing your target clearly if you can't place the reticle on hair?

Is this your criteria for a hunting scope?

Why is light gathering ability not an attractive feature to you?

edit: someone beat me to it.

I hunt within legal time limits. Half hour before sunrise or half hour after sunset, my scope choices work well within those limits.

Ended up with a Zeiss Terra 3-9x42. Nice clear glass! Got a good deal on it, and I got the reticle I wanted. It sits nicely on top of my x-bolt, and now that I have it sighted in to 2" high at 100 metres, I'm fairly confident I'll have no trouble knocking down an animal this year. As long as i get time in the field. Thanks for all your advice!!

I bought a couple of Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 4.5 - 14 X 44 last year for under $300.00. They are fully multi coated with side parallax and seem to track reliably. A bit heavy, I think maybe about 18 oz, but that is not much more than others that have been recommended. I think they also have the "bulletproof" warranty.
