Hey Diehard.
Where was your friend fishing at? Those are definately not catfish. I agree with JJ that they appear to be some kind of cod. If you know the lake, can pinpoint the species easier.

They look like burbot, not sure if my spelling is correct on that, but we catch fish similar to those pics down around Lethbridge like that in keho lake.

They are definitely not burbot, catfish, bowfin, carp or bullhead. I think Jjstar is close, it's some kind of cod.

I think tomcod is the closest bet... Judging by the three fins on it's back.

I agree - not catfish. There are lots a species of catfish, but they all have whiskers on some sort. Tomcod sounds right.

It is a burbot, I use to catch them all the time in northern ontario. I have caught them in ghost reservoir too.

Lived in Ont. for 30 yrs and never caught or heard of anyone catching cod like that! Ont has the fresh water cod (burbot) like Ab has. And you would know a catfish if you seen one.

It's definitely not a burbot or catfish.
My only idea is bowfin? Never caught it ,but it the only one looking similar from "Ontario fishing regulations"

Looks just like the cod we catch in the Queen Charlotte's while jigging for Halibut. Got a couple in the freeze right now. Now I know what to call them. Thanks.

Ok, here's a picture. Again, not a burbot, at least not the one in the first pic. From what I can tell, most of the ones in the second pic look to be a tommy cod as well. Google Tom Cod + picture and you get this right from Fisheries & Oceans

Another Pic:

And a burbot:

I sent copies of the pics to my buddy in N. Ont. and he says they are definitely TomCod. He says around there they are also called SloughCod. He also tells me they are very good smoked and bbq'd, but says they are not like Ling and a lot of other Cod for taste. Says they are pretty strong tasting..
Don't know myself though, as never tasted one.

Caught LOTS of bowfin and acouple burbot on the Grand here in Ontario and it definately is NOT one of those. I'm gonna have to agree on the TomCod.
Never ate bowfin but the burbot are GREAT table fare.
