Boss442, My brother in law and his wife who live in Calgary , where going to fly to California last summer out of Calgary, I talked them into flying out of Great Falls, they did, my brother in law now says any flights to the USA will be out of Great Falls, much smaller air port than Calgary, no traffic problems, and cheaper air fares.

I haven't had any issues.

I was in South Africa a few years ago and on the return when I hit the security,

I realized I had a pocket knife that a good friend had given to me. Hmmm I really didn't want to lose the knife, I had simply forgot to put it in my checked bags.

I slipped it into my carry on and went through the scanner. Not a hitch. When i got to my bags in Atlanta I put it in my checked luggage.

I go to the U.S. every winter to hunt coyotes. I don't take a rifle because of the hassle with permits. I just borrow one down there.

I have a nylon bag that I keep binos , camera rangefinder etc in. When I'm hunting here i also have my knives and ammo etc. in it.
I asked my son to take everything out of the bag except my optics as i was going to carry it on the plane. I had him double check for stray ammo. I checked the bag and put my stuff in it.
When I went through the screener, they took me to the side and had my stuff there. Two women security were interviewing me at the same time. I thought it was clever. One asked a question then the other. I thought it was to catch me off guard. They asked where I was going and why when there were coyotes in Alberta that needed killing.
One of the women talked about her moose hunts with her family every year and blah blah blah. They were both very friendly. BUT they asked me repeatedly about guns and ammo. I told him I had none and was gonna borrow same. After about 15 long minutes of socializing the 'moose hunter' dropped an empty 223 brass out of my bag.

There was a looooong silence. She kept looking at me and finally said you didn't know this was there did you. I told her I had checked the bag. The shell casing was under the the plastic tray in the bottom of the bag. It showed on the xray, but took some digging to come up with it.

She said have a good trip and I was on my way.

Default statistical data integrity

and like all the criminals register their firearms with CFC we are sure that all organized crime groups check with the RCMP before attending at any of the 8 major airports in Canada. how else could anyone operate with any kind of security?

I've traveled around the world and back a couple of times. It's hit and miss as far as how you are treated in the same airport in the same country. I don't think that our security pers are any better or worse than anywhere else. They're pretty much the same as everywhere else that I've gone to. In fact, in some countries that I've gone to there will be a customs person there during the security screening in order to give someone immediate attention if required. In Frankfort the police are carrying submachine guns at the ready across their chest.

All of these people are trained a certain way for a reason. You might find it rude that they are not friendly or polite but that could be enough to flush a no-gooder out who is already nervous. That's why it's designed that way. I'm exMilitary so I understand when some young customs officer is drilling me to see if I'll crack and I don't take offence to him doing it. I could understand why an average person might think that the same guy is rude and arrogant though.

So, to answer the question, I have never had a bad experience with either security or customs in an airport but I understand the system and don't get worked up too much. For the most part, Canadian staff are pretty good.

It's amazing what the traveling public do not know. Hear no evil, see no evil? Is that all that matters? They were polite to me and I've traveled the world. So everything's okay. Is that what matters the next time you strap yourself into several hundred thousands of pounds of aluminum and let somebody hurtle you 7 miles up into the sky for several hours at 80% of the speed of sound? Oh. They're doing they're jobs. They're keeping us safe.

Think again.

I never have any issues with any airport security. I cant remember a time that I havent approached one of them with a smile on my face due to the person in front or a few in front of me who did something dumb. and just said something like, people eh.

they usually smile back and nod, no orders or anything. Needless to say I believe a lot of the issues with airport security are due to the not so frequent/new fliers. Living abroad i flew home to Canada 3 or 4 times a year, usually passing through international security 3x on the way through other countries. There is always more than one person who leaves metal on, or doesnt know to take out their laptop.

When I'm in line i pretty well have belt undone, shoes untied, laptop bag open ready to remove laptop, and my pockets empty(which i usually just dump change/keys/phone into a pocket on my laptop bag for easy access to replace it back into my pockets after the scan.

No one in my way I can have all my stuff into 2 bins and into the scanner in less than 30 seconds easy. on the other side i grab all my stuff and leave the area to redress away form the cluster.

One thing I have noticed in all the airports ive been in, is that in Canada they have staff in the lines constantly telling people about laptops, things not to bring on the plane, to have boarding pass and passport handy, metal objects and even zip locs for items that need them, etc. Even people that are new to this, can be ready. But in the US and other countries it seems they expect everyone to be a frequent flier and know what to do, which just leads to the frustration of constant issues.

SO after all that, back to the original reason for the post, simply having a couple courteous staff around and in the line to remind people of things a dozen or so people before the actual scanner, would solve a lot of issues.

That or add a line for those that know whats going on, and leave the regulars to beep away with a bunch of rookie customs agents in charge.

Default Traveling with Air Pistol

I'm on my 5th passport, as I worked overseas for 14 years before moving to Canada. I've learned through many experiences that you have to act
- as if you are dumb, don't be a smart a...
- don't say more than what question requires,
- don't do more than what you were told,

Especially helps in Asian, Former Russian Rep. and poor African countries.

Here is another story...

Last year in February, I went to Toronto for Air Gun Grand Prix. I declared at Edmonton Int'l that I have an Air Pistol with me, both cylinders are depressurized and case is locked. Lauggage is also locked by a combination lock.

They asked me to put the luggage through x-ray machine. Two officers spend like a minute looking at the x-ray image on the monitor, and later I was told that all was good. That was it... No forms, no $50 to Air Canada, no actual inspection.

I was impressed.

The way back from Toronto was a whole different story though.

When I informed check-in desk that I have an air pistol in my luggage, i was told to pay $50 fee, fill a form, taken to x-ray machine escorted by an officer; whole process took around 1 hour. Thanks God I went to airport 4 hour early just in case something like this would happen.

I think inconsistencies are due to lack of knowledge...

Regards.

I've never had a personal problem with security.... they are doing their job. Although before the hightened security i seemed to get picked for the additional search after the scanners. Doesn't bother me... i always tried to lighten the situation. Asked "Would you like to have this performed behind closed doors" Me:"Why we getting naked?"

Always got a smirk out of the security personnel.

My beef was always with Canadian Customs. I understand someone doing their job but to have my suitcase articles thrown all over the place and then told to pick it up..... this bothers me. This has happened on so many occasions that i now debate even leaving the country

I believe the thread was about the attitude of airport security people
not how safe it is to fly....In that case it's not safe to go in to a high rise
building or cross the street as for that matter. But as for as people give respect and you might get respect.

Two years ago they made me take my HAT TAC of my Stetson - it was a very small shaoed bullet with C.I.L. stamped into it , and even after i showed them it was only a hat tac they said " no, it LOOKS like a bullet"!!
I told the scurity idjit EXACTLY what the security thought of his paranoid attitude, and he said i didn't have to fly if i didn't want to.
I then told him that flying is not what i wanted to do but had to, but that had nothing to do with his nazi attitude.
I was waiting for some kind of dust - up, but it didn't happen - the wife put the tac in her PURSE and it was okay!!!
The week before i flew a charter out if the same airport and walked on with my danged multiplier - when I said i would put it in baggage after I realized, the girl at the counter said "no problem, we're just going to Edmonton"!
What a bunch of puttzes.....

It surprises me every time I go through airport security the amount of people that have no clue what they should or shouldn't be doing. It would make things a whole lot easier if people did their research ahead of time and know what to bring, what to wear and what to carry on. No one needs to be a seasoned traveler to educate themselves. I still see people wearing their belts (like the OP) carrying their whole make up case on their carry on bags, etc. I imagine security get annoyed after awhile as well with the lack of common sense and if a person is going to go through with attitude then I imagine its going to be directed back at them. I myself have had nothing but pleasant experiences with security personal when I've traveled.

Every airport security area has several posters indicating what is not allowed on flights. Yet on every, stinkin trip there is at least 1 and usually several people who have prohibited items and then put up a fuss. Why do people insist on carrying water bottles, manicure sets, costco sized hand cream, thermos of coffee, swiss army knives, leathermans etc, etc, etc. Then the people who are holding up the show always look at the line up of passengers and give that same stupid look indicating how ridiculous it is that they have to follow the rules!! And then they mumble crap about " Do I look like a Terrorist! Oh,do you really think I'm going to blow up a plane with a nail file!"

I feel like slapping them myself!! I feel like asking if they couldn't read or notice the half dozen giant sized posters while they were waiting in line for an hour! It really is no wonder that some of these security personnel seem impatient.
Sad, but true.

As a pilot, I had to fly commercially a LOT with my last job (repositioning). There were countless times that I wanted to beyatch slap a traveller in line, due to a response similar to the above. Ridiculous.

It absolutely amazes me how ignorant people can be towards the security agents.

On the OTHER hand....

There is such inconsistency in security that it's laughable. Simple items that are missed in a large center (ie Vancouver) are scrutinized in places like Yellowknife and Whitehorse. Case in point, I forget a tube of Chapstick in my pocket. IN Vancouver, they could care less. In Whitehorse, I'll get the "tsk tsk" and waggle of a finger, coupled with a smirk as they throw it in the trash.

ANYHOW -

Security these days is ridiculous. I agree that security is needed but the lack of ability to profile (oh it's racist!!!) results in what we've seen lately, with an 82 year old woman with prosthetic boobs and a knee pin basically humiliated in public.

I hate to travel by air, and I'm a pilot, for crying out loud.

Quit slowing me down! LOL Empty your pockets, take off your shoes, your belt, take the laptop out, don't try to take your water bottle, that big tube of toothpaste, or "just a tiny little fingernail clipper". Dont chat with the staff, just answer their questions BRIEFLY and do what you are told.

sign me

Sick of people who act like they've never flown before and waste everyone's time. LOL

" just answer their questions BRIEFLY and do what you are told. "

Is that your advice to the 82 yr old woman who failed to declare her breast implant and was treated so rudely?

- so just how much does your dignity need to be abused, or how much politically correct 'security' intrusions must you endure to make you question what you're being subjected to?

ABSOLUTELY. Had she just simply and quietly told the truth right off the bat nothing would have happened. She thought SHE could decide what they needed to know and what they didn't need to know. Rule number 1: DON'T LIE WHEN GOING THROUGH SECURITY OR CUSTOMS.

The wife and I fly quite a bit now and usually we breeze through because we know the drill well.

Today was a bit interesting though. We flew out of Vancouver and when I was "wanded" the wand kept beeping when passed over the outside of my left knee. The security guy asked me three times if I had metal in my knee or leg; my answer was "No". He patted my leg down each time, then I had to go through the full body scanner (or have a more intensive pat down). When I exited the scanner I asked if anything showed up, and the answer was "No," to which I replied, "Told you so." He just shrugged and said, "The equipment does funny things sometimes. Have a nice day, sir."

The point is: they were professional and since I kept my cool it was just a minor inconvenience.
