Italian pipeline workers

I know one of the members on here is a VP of a pipeline company. He may chime in. Or he may not have the time

There is only 20 Italians working on that project
For kitimat there will be up to 30

It’s pretty simple. The company’s that are doing the work are Italian owed. Hence the Italian workers.

Those sound like reasonable numbers for trying to fill a shortage of skilled workers on large projects

They probably work cheaper than Albertans/Canadians.

Around here our contractors etc are swamped with work yet some still say there is nothing out there....go figure

Maybe they're tired of getting layed off at the first opportunity, all the time.

There is a lot of people that are working lower paying jobs in exchange for stability or the ability to go home at the end of shift

I am one of them. As mentioned earlier I have much better options offered to me financially(some are 3 times the pay) and a higher level position but them come at a cost. Personally I have years of chasing money behind me and did really well but I have had enough of that life. I have done the time away in camps and have also been part of 100+ man layoffs that come without warning

If I had no choice and was unemployed I would do it again but if I can work and pay my bills at another job I will

That said if you are unemployed on the government tit because you are not willing to do this kind of work you need to give your head a shake. There are those who would gladly take the job but can’t get a call back too

Well, the idea they brought in help is not surprising. Every year thousands of Mexicans, Filipinos etc come to Canada to work because they can't get Canadians to do the jobs. Back in 1974 we had all kinds of Portuguese and Spanish guys working on the Syncrude plant because Canadians would not come to Ft Mac. These foreign workers made the same pay as Canadians, and earned performance bonuses for output. Free room and board, they thought they had the world by the tail on a downhill drag, they couldn't believe Canadians didn't want the jobs.

Right now the guy re-doing my landscaping is trying to hire some help, has been trying for 2 months. Zip, Nada, butkess, even though he is paying $30-35 an hour for semi skilled help. He is basically having to work on his own so the job is taking 3 times as long as he planned.

I don’t know where he is based out of or his requirements but there is definitely people out there that would be all over that wage that have taken much lower pay. The only downside I see is his offer would be seasonal unless he has more to his business then landscaping

Seen examples of both employers not being able to find people to work and people who are actually looking hard or taking low pay because they can’t find work. Sometimes there is a reason for both failing and often it is their expectations

I worked a job some years ago near North Battleford. The contractor was from the states, They were allowed to bring in supervision and safety but the workers had to be from Canada.
