Default banff fishing

my wife is gonna be in cgy for two days and banff for 2 days on business so i figured i might go with her and try and get some fishing done. the bow is a given, but i dont know much about banff. is there anything open? anything worth fishing? it will be all flyfishing, but there will be a spinning rod in my truck as a backup plan. any info would be great, thanks

All I can offer you is that the 2011 park licence expires March 31 and on April 1 you will need a 2012 licence.

Wink

For Banff you would need a different fishing permit for fishing in a National Park. Also as SonnyJ pointed out, the current angling license will expire March 31, 2012, and if you are visitting after this date, you would need the new angling license for the 2012-2013 season. Rumor has it the Bow is open for fishing, and people have been getting good fishing action on the Bow.

Sonny, I thought you could buy a day or week licence as well? We bought a four day licence back in June and then decided to go with a yearly one after we went back. (mind you, the difference between a yearly and a day permit is worth just getting the year one).

One thing about the availability of the licences is you can not buy them at the gates. You'll have to head into a PC info centre to get them.

The Parks are pretty strict with what you can have in your tackle box with respect to leaders, jigs, hooks, lead and bait, so check with the current regs. We have a separate box for just going into the parks. The wardens will check your box and if they find any non reg items in it, they may write you up - so clean out your box of anything that is not allowed.

I can't help you with the Banff part of where to fish... I usually stay up in Jasper/Hinton areas.

I'd stay off the ice.
Fish outside of the Park.

The only waters open until around the may long weekend as follows..

Bow River - from Bow Lake outlet to east park boundary including associated backwaters and oxbow. No ice fishing on the Bow River.
No tributaries are open..

Per Permit
Daily $ 9.80
Annual $ 34.30

Valid at Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho national parks.

You would be better of to fish the bow around Canmore..
