What are the top 5 companies for size and higher salaries that are not oil companies?
Someone asked what the top 5 companies raking into account number of employees and higher than average salaries in southern Alberta and again in Northern Alberta.
I was stumped.
CN?
Anyone have facts on this?

What do you consider "oil companies"? The pipeline companies pay well. Perhaps also process control companies, servicing companies. Utilities are pretty good.

Chemical companies are the place. Not tied to oil and gas or cyclical like them. And closely comparable wages. I have nothing but positives...so far. With this market nothing is for sure. Now with the Dow and DuPont merger talks who knows what could become of jobs there in the coming future.

Provincial and federal Governments. These two hit the nail on the head. Just do a job search on any of the job boards on the net and you will see that they are both about 20% higher than any other job postings. Large cities are the next for high paying.

Atco, canadian utilities, stantec, capital power, keyera, dow and shell chemical, Evonik, pulp mills. Pretty much every oil and gas company.
I know if i took a similar government job it would be an easy 25% paycut. Definitely not government, lol

I would think Govt. jobs (city, prov. fed.) would be right up there for wages and benifits.
Healthcare must be big also, though that might also be govt.
Another one that comes to mind is food industry, Superstores, Saveons, Sobeys etc. though the wges aren't as high.

While not a massive employer the police services have some impressive wages. Well earned in my books but high nonetheless

Dow Chemical, Agrium, CN, Atco electric/gas, Finning/Cat. That'd be my guess.

Communications
For sure Shaw and Telus
Gas transmission companies and pipeline companies
Finally process companies like those around FT Sask that export. Fertilizer companies. Downstream products.
Bankers.

The Fed and Bank of Canada not included. Interesting topic I never thought about.

Looks like the utilities aren't safe in AB right now either.
Buddy of mine got called into a strategic planning meeting the other day at 9:00am and the entire group got marched out at 9:05 with their walking papers. He said 400-450 took the hit

I think Safeway is Alberta's largest employer.
They tend to pay quite well if I recall correctly.

I think I saw recently that Telus just released a group to the tune of around 1500, but looking online are still hiring. They are definitely a big company in the west that aren't totally reliant on the oil and gas industry. I would guess all the tech companies are doing alright ATM due to all things internet and cellular.
