Northland Tungsten Punch Fly. Gold one is the best right now, second best is orange.
Add maggots to the tip, jig to attract, keep still for the bite.
Got my limit every time I used it.

I was trying a new technique I heard of called ice trolling. Drill holes 10-20 feet apart. Work each hole 5 minutes or less and follow structure. Deep to shallow. Or along the length of it. Our deepest hole was ~80 feet and our shallowest was 15. We didnt get anything on the flasher or ice cam. Came out of there all day and left with one rocky. He was delicious btw. Baked simple. Peeled out the meat. Little fresh lemon juice on it then put it on some toast. Reminded me of halibut. But no lake trout.
The village of shacks in the north. What are they all after?
This was my first trip to Spray and asking my Northern Ontario father what do for Lakers through ice he suggested 20 feet of water, first thing AM, a few different tackle options, along a structure, drop-off, point kind of thing. But I feel confused a bit to heard everyone is going straight for deepest spots to get them. Maybe its a more sterile lake than the ones in Northern Ontario and they feed deep, not shallow water?

Ice trolling...sounds interesting! I fished today in a wind storm with no shelter and keeping 2 holes clear was quite a struggle lol. I had to scoop slush every 2 min or so. I can't imagine running around, keeping 10 holes clear
😅...but then again...not everyone fishes in a hurricane ...
Made out with 5 rockies by noon...

13" of solid black ice on Sunday when we were out -- between Driftwood and Sparrowhawk. Measured with the tape.

I was out near Sparrowhawk today.... fishing was pretty steady for me, and there was about 4 -5" of snow on the ice. It got pretty windy there this afternoon, might be some drifting by tomorrow.

I too was out at sparrowhawk today. Skunk for me but holy did my little nephew ever smash my ego to the ground. He caught 8 only kept 3. White tube jigs for me and chartreuse for him. Left the lake by 3 as the wind was blowing hard and we didn’t have a full shelter.

Also there today, with the whole family.
First time I fished 1pm-dark.
Went to the west shore across from Sparrowhawk, away from the rest and the 30-40 wind-skiers.
Pretty good action, and landed my personal best laker from Spray. 2.5lb range. Good fighter.
Tip-ups outfished the jigging rod 5-1.

I have never tried tipups on sprey. What depths are you setting them? Any specific type of lure work better on the tip ups? You have sparked my interest might have to give it a try.

Really simple setup.
Small treble, with two small split shots about 10” above.
2-2.5” smelt hooked through the top of the back.
- ensure the smelt is balanced/level in the water, otherwise change where it’s hooked.
Tip ups that cover the entire hole are best to prevent holes from freezing up and filling with snow from the wind.
I prefer to fish in 60-70ft for Lakers.
Smelt 2ft off bottom.

I usually peace out by noon or 1. I find afternoon bite quite slow...

I've never been much of a "length" guy when it comes to fish...more into weight.
But I would estimate 18".
Bite was awesome at 4pm. Slow til then.

Fish at Spray have already gone to bed by 11. Be setup and line in the water just before sunrise and go to Canmore for lunch at noon. Missing prime time at those hours there.

Agreed. If I'm not fishing by 7:30 AM, I feel like I'm missing out. I usually have my rockies limit by 9:30-10. Always bugs me to death when I fish with a buddy and as soon as we set up, instead of dropping lines in the water, they start tying leaders and lures lol
