If you have trouble catching fish from shore at NSR you may also have trouble fishing from shore on a lake since usually the river is a better shore fishery than most lakes in the area and the week growth can be limiting this time of year... until it goes down in the fall.

I'd recommend trying out the trout lakes in the area. East Pit was good the other week. I always catch some at Hermitage Lake in the fall right in Edmonton. Mornville Res, Cardiff, Star, hasse, Spring are a few you could try.

I've never fished it but their are some Narrows at Lac st anne that a lot of people have success at during spring and early summer. Not sure how they fish in the fall. I don't think you can keep walleye there and not sure about the other fish.

If you want your weighted rig to sit still or slowly drift that would change things. If you want it to stay still it depends on the bottom and current. Just increase weight until its not moving much, anywhere from 3/8 to 1 ounce usually will work depending on current and what you want. Try lures though like a 1 or 2 inch len thompsom red and yellow 5 o diamonds, two inch shallow diving crankbaits in clown or other shiny or bright finishes. Chartruese double tail jig or single, the tiger striped ones work well too with a pink jig head. Tip with a minnow or strip of beef heart. Thats river fishing 101.

If you are going to be fishing in the river this is your best type of rig to use

Stolen from sturgeon hound

As a fellow river angler, I would recommend and ask for you to use a rig like this. If you need further assistance I can provide that for you.

The river has a pile of snags and large species, store bought p rigs have poor hooks. I have seen them break and straighten and the rigs them selves fail easily.

If you break off from a weight snag with a p rig then the poor fish is left packing all the weight as well as an extra hook to get snagged with.

I have seen large fish get caught and the beads slip on the p rig and almost snap off the weigh and then then you loose the fish.

With this method the fish is only ever left with the hook and line.

I have fished with home made p right with 100 pound fluro, 3 way swivel set ups but the sliding rig is far superior.

I use anywhere from 2-6 oz weight depends on bottom condition and current.

Remember the most important thing about the river is when you decide to reel in you have to do it as fast as you can or very high chance of getting some bush trout.

Thanks

Some people frown on me when I say this but in all honesty if you can try and find some sort of watercraft to get you out on the water. A cheap canoe, kayak, tinner, pontoon boat even a belly boat will make a huge difference. The fishing around Edmonton is wayyyy better with a boat then on shore imo.

For the naysayers who are going to say the NSR is awesome from shore, the NSR is way better from a boat so yeah...

There you go, some days the fishing is just tough, I spent 10 hrs out the other day and only had 1 undersized walleye before being rewarded with a nice fish. It can change in a hurry. Don't be afraid of putting some serious rod hours in I put about 40 in this week. Ended up with a pile of nice fish out of it as well

If you fish the NSR go to any back eddy, outfall, creek mouth and cast jigs, reel in slow off bottom and you will catch them all night long. if you want to keep some trout try chiccakoo lake west northwest of Edmonton.

Try anyone of the stocked ACA ponds a week after they are stocked. Hatchery fish are used to their meals falling from automatic feeding machines so they gobble up good falling from above. Only works for a few months till they wise-up. Beaumount Pond and Herm, as mentioned are good.

Also for $40 for a couple hours rent a canoe at Wabamun camp site and paddle to the train bridge and cast spoons for pike!

In my opinion your best bet would be to have fun fishing the NSR how the other guys described. Instead of going out to a lake like Spring and catching small trout from shore to smoke, use the gas money to buy a wild sockeye from the grocery store. It will be healthier and tastier :-)

I tend to agree.

I have read a few of your threads of your catches in your set up! Very impressive!

I have tried the NSR a few times and was skunked each time. Some people have done well from the shore.. for me.. it is not my gig.

I echo the commets about a a watercraft on the NSR. It might make fishing more enjoyable as you can move around easier in the water.

OP,

Hermitage pond has been good for rainbow trout. I have not been this year, but last year I caught a few each time I went. They were very nice over an open fire, butter and some spices...

I have heard the NSR by the Devon bridge is good. I was on the side closest to Devon (East side of the bridge?) a few times and have had no luck. Perhaps the other side might yield you some results. Check the regs before you head out. That way you are not making any errors for fish retentions.
