I’m going to do something I’ve never done before. I was going to take my 45/70 moose hunting but it’s a mule kickin pig. I have decided to take my 6.5x55 moose hunting next week. Hopefully it will do the trick.

I don't know if you can find this stuff, or if it's legal anymore, but when my dad bought the ww2 era husqvarna x55 we got a box of tracer fire for the gun. You could watch your bullet fly like in the movies. It was so cool to watch it ricochet.

Nothing to do with the caliber per se, but this thread gets me thinking back to that gun.

Can you get tracer fire for any caliber these days?

There is something to be said, about an extremely long bullet, traveling at reasonable velocities that just seems to do more, then one would expect.

From Saturday’s shooting with the Blaser R8 in 6.5x55. 200 meters on electronic target. This shooting was part of verifying the trajectory with reference to clicks on the scope and the ABMobile app.

Default just placed an order...

...for a nice m96 in 6.5x55 on tradex. It will belong to a first time hunter once I have it set up. I will top it with a little vx2 1x4 20mm. I plan to teach her to shoot left handed on it as she's got quite a difference in her eyes and the support side off a rest will play to that strength.

It's a surprise for when she completes her course.

Have had many of them but never got a chance to fire any of them. After reading some of these reviews I'm starting to think I should get out and try a few of them out. Sounds like a great caliber.

I first bought a 6.5x55 in a Tikka T3 Hunter. I shot many deer with it. Then I had it rechambered to 6.5-06. It's taken a few deer like that as well.
I then bought a 6.5x55 in a Husqvarna 1640 lightweight. I have it sighted in with 120 gr Speer Hot Cor and H380. Groups 0.75" to 1.2". Going 2900 fps. Planning on taking a deer or two with it this season.

Did the barrel need set back as the base/web is .480 on the 6.5x55 and .470 on the 6.5x06 ?

Default he should have

In the 60's when ammo was short for the 6.5x55 folks made brass from shortened 30-06 .This was a dangerous practice and not generally recommended.Perhaps a gunsmith on here can elaborate.

I just did a load up for my tikka 6.5x55 using the Barnes online manual for the 120ttsx and it seem Grossly under pressure for their max of 44.3gr RL22. Ran them through my chrono and was clocking 2520fps. My older Barnes manual was saying to use 46gr as a max load and alliant just lists 46gr for a modern action so that’s probably where i’ll Start next. I was hoping to try it on deer this year and I still might. The drop at this speed at 300m was Ridiculous and I was sited in for 200yrds.

My load for my rifles, for the 129gr Accubond LR is 50 grams of R-22. That provides about 2750fps in my Sako Bavarian Carbine, and around 2830fps in my T-3 Varmint. My friend is using 49gr or R-22 with the 130gr Accubond, in his Tikka, for right around 2800fps. We both use Lapua cases, and case life is excellent. He used his Tikka to fill my moose tag with a partner license last year, and the moose ran about 50ft and collapsed dead after a lung shot.

That sounds much better, if I'm getting 2750-2800 I would be satisfied . I'm using lapula brass also and CCI BR2 . Thanks

The 6.5x55 is grossly underloaded in most manuals due to the number of older rifles still in use today.Pressures for those older rifles are usually kept around 42-45 k psi. It's unfortunate for those that have a modern post-war era rifle such as your Tikka find little, if any, modern factory ammunition or load data. The Lyman manual (50th edition) lists modern higher pressure loads for the 6.5 Swede and there may be others.
Using loads generating 56,000> psi will present no issues with a Modern Rifle. With modern powders like RL22 and RL 26 MV's up to 3000 fps are safely attainable with bullets up to 130 grains.

How can a manufacture of ammo make hot loads for modern guns and low power loads for older guns?

Someone is bound to get them mixed up and blow their gun apart in their face.

For that reason I'd choose a modern 6.5

+P loads is how they are designated.

Default this why

The 8mm mauser is guppy loaded by most NA ammo companies no where near it's potential. As well two differing bore sizes S .323" and J .318 to contend with.Imagine the 44-40 depending on maker anywhere from .426-.432 or larger.

Yup, 45/70 and 388/55 are two more !
The 8mm Mauser is a fantastic cartridge, I've owned a few.

Who makes +P loads? On federals website I seed .257 roberts +p

I've never used +p loads. Does the headstamp include the +p?

Either way... I don't feel it's safe because there are a bunch of guys that have passed their pal courses and will get that confused or what's that mean. Who knows. Let's fire it anyways type of scenarios.

As much as I enjoy the m38 I have. If I was purchasing a new rifle. I would steer everyone towards the 6.5cm hands down due to its rising popularity.
