Default Hunting Vultures With My Camera

Out on Moose Lake last summer and came across all of these vultures. I've seen them before but not like this. I thought there might have been something dead in the area for so many to be around. Not sure if they usually flock up like this. Glad I had my camera!

There is a pair of these ugly things nesting in an old farm house on my property. they sure dont take to you getting to close they hiss at you and try to hit you with the wings. I had some calves get into the old barn and had to get them out the vultures did not like me getting that close.

Excellent photos!! Reminds me of when I was working down in Kentucky, those birds are everywhere. Good to see some more sightings in Alberta, I seen one flying around Grassland this summer and came across one when I was hunting upland on Wainwright. They are a cool looking bird in an ugly sense. Kinda like watching UFC fighters.LOL.

Here's a pic of one I got last summer, not too far from home. They aren't uncommon but I don't usually see flocks of them.......

They are protected both federally and provincially, in case you have aspirations of killing one

I've never seen them here, but I was surprised to see a couple in southern Ontario, last summer. Apparently, they are a recent immigrant there, which makes me wonder if they are here, as well. God, what an ugly bird! Neat pictures.

I'm pretty sure they were joking. Don't think I'd want to try eatin' one.

So are seagulls.... Hasn't stopped me from taking the odd one out. I hate those birds! Wrong yes, but it's definitely needed.

As Mom used to say "they are so ugly they are cute." I've done a little bit with Snoopy the vulture who starred with Jackie Chan. Snoopy is a birds of prey rescue bird and can't survive in the wild any more. You would not believe how soft and warm that ugly red head is!

We're seeing more non native critters up here lately, like the the turkey vulture. Rob caught one on his trail camera up near Calling lake this past summer. Racoons in Fort Sask, likely jumped off the trains.

It's my understanding that turkey vultures were pretty uncommon in Ontario until the widespread adoption of blacktop roads, which provided vultures with a) great updrafts on which to glide and b) a steady supply of carrion. I imagine it's a similar story in Alberta.
