Your user name is certainly apropo today. Great story and great pic. Congrats. Only thing missing in your story is the name of your hunting partner. Looks like he/she did a lot of work too.

That's awesome!!! Quite the accomplishment for sure. What percentage of your spread is in that pic? Just curious because if most of it is in there you did really well for sure. Very cool.

The question is: what are you going to do with all this meat?

Default Thanks Guys!

Thanks guys! Yeah - it was a pretty sweet afternoon for sure!

To answer the questions about decoys, I put out about 450 windsocks. It was a mix of Deadly Decoys (which are my favorite), Sillosocks and some TangleFree feeders on high stakes (which is where I laid with the dog). I put up 5 or 6 flyers on the upwind part of the spread and left the rotaries in the truck. I find that the rotaries don't look or work as well if there's too much wind, but that's just from a handful of shoots with them.

It was a pile of work for sure for one guy, but well worth it in the end. I will say though that I'm learning a lot and wish I had more time to experiment a bit with them. The very next day I set up and had about 20,000 geese come back including all of the migrators that were cruising through. The decoys were set up just slightly different from the day before and it really didn't work too great! Only ended up shooting a few. I think if I could re-do that one tomorrow though I'd need a lot of shells!

There were zero bands on all of those geese, and out of the 50 there was only one juvie snow and one or two Ross's. We used to shoot Saskatchewan in the springtime every year (just pass shooting) and out of the 300 or so that we would shoot each spring we would only get 1 or 2 bands.

Glad you enjoyed the photo. I must admit I really enjoyed taking that picture myself!!! It was a lot of years in the making!

Nicely done!

You didn't mention if you used an e-caller...did you?

I've never hunted the spring because all I really know about it is it's a heck of a lot of work as you have demonstrated! Again congrats on one of those magical days. 50 geese sure makes cleaning the gun worth it.

Yes - I had an e-caller running for the entire hunt. I'm starting to think that an e-caller is pretty necessary to consistently shoot them, but I have a lot to learn about it still.

A couple weeks ago my buddy had his e-caller running with a couple of speakers and it sounded awesome - even from quite a distance. I only have one FoxPro myself, and if you're not downwind of it or in the direction it's pointing it's tough to hear. I think having a couple of them is a good idea. They make a frigging racket in your ear though if you're sitting close to them!

How many speakers would you run? Im considering building my own snow call and am not sure on how many speakers to run.

Great job. Speaking from experience, after getting frustrated with uncooperative birds, it feels nice when they finally start falling from the sky!

Way to go Goose Slammer, awesome achievement on the 50 solo. I to have had the opportunity to get out quite a bit this spring, and although i have not achieved the 50 solo (YET) lol, I am averaging 10-20 per trip and not once did i use more than 30 decoys and a few times as little as 9 full bodies. So for all of you who think you have to have large spreads, not necessarily always true. So grab a few dekes, get out there and give it a try. It is so much fun.

To be completely honest I'm not the right person to ask! I'm still learning a lot about decoying snows, but from what I've heard if you have multiple speakers running in different places throughout the spread it usually works a bit better.

I think it's probably pretty important to make sure you don't overwhelm them with noise though either (unless you have 2,000 decoys - which I don't!). But I know there are some guys on here that can provide way more insight on this than I can.

I saw some pics last week of some AO members that were shooting 100+ snows for a couple of days. Awesome photos that I saw from a friend. I hope they share those photos on the forum because they make my pic look like nothing! Those guys actually have some knowledge but I'm far from an expert at this point. Hopefully I can tee up with the real Snow Pros on here for some shoots next year. Unfortunately I didn't have much time this year to try to set that up.
