When I worked for the SkiDoo distributor we sold about 4 of the Elites in Alberta in 1974. They came with a fan cooled 440. Later versions had water cooled motors. They were only made for a few years.They were cold to ride in because the motor was in behind and the rider was not getting any heat off the motor. Then in the early 90's a redesigned Elite was produced that had an enclosed cab. Unfortunately there were some heat issues with the enclosed and cramped motor location which I believe caused some fires, and so the new Elite was quietly discontinued. It was also expensive and there were not enough buyers.
Elites come up for sale on Kijiji occasionally and cost between 7500 and 12000.
I have always wanted to resurrect one but haven't found the right one yet.
What I did see last spring on Kijiji in Manitoba was someone had taken two used Smart cars, put skis in front and Mat-tracks on the rear and sold them for around 10000.
I personally would like to have a twin track enclosed unit for just touring with the wife on cold days.
