Are you trapping in a marsh, Pointer? The darned drainage ditches around here are blocked or flooding and it makes for poor trapping. I might have to go with a plan B for a week and head out to the lake.

Seen some tracks in the snow and I followed them. Bingo hole in the snow so you guessed it 120.

First rat of the season got em about 2 weeks ago.

Here are a few to feed your addiction. One is a good size about 12 inches long.

Only sloughs I'm seeing any is where they have lived in the road banks. Went for a drive tonight an seen 5. I'm thinking I might be smarter to leave them till fall.
Last fall I figgered I'd leave them till march, so I've been wrong before. I doubt there's 5% of what was around last fall

I'll let you know on Wednesday night, Nube. The ditches aren't going to work for me for another week or two, either blocked or flooded, so I'm going to go to the local lake/slew. It has huts and I thought that it died out every year, but an older fella told me that I should get my butt in there if I wanted rats. The slew is only maximum 3' deep....maybe 4 right now. He trapped it for +60 years but he said that he slowed down a bit once he hit 75 years old.

Taylor I think your right and I might be selective of what I trap this spring. I could easily wipe them out for a few years if I hit them hard I think and then I will be a sad boy!! I think I should expect a 90% die off this year I think. Thank goodness they breed fast and a lot

Default Spring Rats

Picked up 35 the last couple days, huge jumbo springs...love it. Got booted off a lake due to my quad starting to fall through the ice in the shallows. Common sense prevailed and I pulled all my sets. Time to hit the shallower stuff, culverts are almost open here. Dug outs are also opening, getting floaters readied.

I took a drive out to the slew this afternoon and I saw 5 or 6 rats in about 10 minutes, nice size too. I could have shot them but I didn't have my waders with me. It's only about 3' deep at the deepest point. It has huts on it and it appears that it did extremely well this winter. I'm going to pack up in a bit and set my traps tomorrow. Let the games begin.
