Midge season is just upon us methinks!
Any takers?
Winner gets the envy of all.

Everywhere I normally fish don't open until june 15th.

We should split the province into three parts. NSR and up, Bow and south area, and the Red deer river and in between as they all melt at different times.

Wonder if a guy floated a foam hopper in a hole on the ice if fish would come up and eat it? Would that be considered fly fishing?

Several years back on Beaver Mines lake, I fished close to where a vehicle went through in the spring of that year, and I swear I saw a fish rise a couple of times there!!!
Use a chainsaw , cut a good 30 yard by 2 yard patch on your local rainbow lake.... And there ya go!

Yeah saw a couple doing that too. Only the whites seemed to be interested though where i was.

I noticed a couple fish rising yesterday on the Bow as well. They weren't after any of the dries I tried tossing to them. Caught a couple on nymphs and lost a big one. Snapped my line, starting to wonder if my tippet material has gone bad.

Seen a bunch of whites rising for the midges on Saturday. Only got whitefish action but it was still nice getting a tug on your line.

Griffins gnats should be in everyone's winter fly box. It just makes sense. I havnt experienced it myself, but a couple of buddies agree that the best dry fly fishing of the year can be in the mid winter chinooks when the midges hatching and the fish are slurping.

from the amount of fish me and Jake saw surfacing I would definitely be able to vouch for that. a double or triple mountain midge should also be in your winter fly box if you want to dry fly fish. I read an article that fish in winter would rather come up for a clump of midges rather then pick off one at a time.

Yeup, those are the fish that my friends in calgary target. Size 14-16 hooks that imitate the clump. The size of hooks arent to hard on the eyes, and the fish seem to eat them with indifference.

Ive been told the 14-16 short shanked hooked, griffins gnats do the job. The fish arent picky, and so long as it looks like a clump of midges, the fish will gladly eat em up.

I'll fish 16-20 griffiths, on the bow they tend to work much better than multi midges. The midges will all climb on top of a griffiths and then you have multi-midge that looks realistic

No secret, pretty consistent midge fishing here.
It's just that it's such flat water... That you gotta go 7x and deliver well above the feeder.
Fun but challenging!
And you stand the chance of nailing a nice brown.
Crows got a few nice midge spots..... But I forget where
I find that I can't fish clusters on the Crow, they're pickier for some reason .

Yeah... Midges are the way to go. Last time i was at the river (few weeks ago) I saw many risers in the morning.
