Question Vancouver Island sal****er fishing advice needed

Will spend 7 day vacation on Vancouver Island with my boat, including 3 to 4 days of salt water fishing at both Ucluelet and Campbell River. Fished on shore for Dog fish when I lived in Vancouver, but never went to deep sea. Any advice would be expected.

There's a really good sal****er board on Sportfishing BC, tons of good info, some of which is even true. Not too sure of your timing but good springs are being picked up all over esp on the north end of the island. Most guys use downriggers and take either bait or hardware with a flasher somewhere between 60 and 100' deep. On the west side it can blow up quickly so nautical charts, a compass and a GPS are a must; fog becomes more of an issue in Aug but it can roll in at any time. I've had it go from 1 meter swells to 8m swells in 15 mins so I can't overstress being cautious. The coho are also in esp on the north end; them (along with pinks) can be picked up right thru to Sept with some beautiful Northerns picked up well into Sept.

If the budget can allow you might want to hire a charter for a day just to learn the area and the ropes. I'd consider it money well spent.
