Default water temperature

How many of you actually carry a thermometer and measure the water temperature? Someone with some kind of chart for the bugs a different temperatures? I was watching a you tube video and this guy measures it and mention around 10 different caddis species with that particular temperature...I said..what?? is that important and crucial the water temperature?

I measure and record temps and bugs on the water in a fishing diary. It goes back 30 years.

osem...

I used to take water temperatures and did for years. I finally concluded that I was going fishing anyway regardless of water temps.
Water temps are important! In the spring rising water temperatures will result in better fishing in the afternoon than morning. Similarly, in summer, morning will often be better than afternoon all things being equal.
All trout have preferred water temps. and the closer the trout gets to it's preferred temp, the happier it is.
Same story with bugs. Preferred temp means hatching increases.
Whether or not you should manipulate your day to satisfy some caddis is up to you.
I suspect that the video was a April Fool's Joke!

Cool

On lakes you can find surface temp corridors fish will have a preference . I have made crude temp charts . Amazing how sensitive fish can be .

Absolutely, temperature has alot to do with the timing of hatches,as well as the comfort and activity levels of trout and other salmonids. But like Don A. said......I'm gonna fish regardless,I'm just a lil more enthusiastic when my thermometer is telling me that conditions are optimal. If one was to keep detailed records as Lornce has, along with observations in regards to water levels, hatches observed, ambient temps etc....sooner or later you should be able to predict the timing of seasonal hatches, but it will probably be a decade at least of avid angling and dedicated data collecting on any given river before you could predict specific hatches with an uncanny degree of accuracy?

Start a bug tank, you will be in the ballpark accurate in three yrs .with detailed data you will get it down in no time. Not quite as tough as It may appear to get a handle on hatches.

No, The video I watched was from the new fly fisher or something like that...was a 27min introductory video to fly fishing in you tube, they explain how to approach the water, temperature, fishing nymphs, fishing emerges, etc.

I Think I'm going to search more info about it...
