Default props?

Okay so i know i need to know my rpms and motor size. Motor is a 1989 45hp mariner. Rpm gauge does not work. But here's what's going on, the boat came with a 14 pitch would not go on plane. I found another prop that came with it a 11. By my self or another light person with me it can go on to plane and rip. If i have 3 people it sounds like its reving out and just won't get on plane. Do i go to a lower number pitch? Thanks for your help. Mitch

Lower number of pitch = more power
Higher number = more speed

Can't go much lower in pitch than what you have, might be better off considering the size of motor to go with a hydro, it bolts to the cavity. cost is quite a bit less than a prop and should bring you to plane quickly.

Definatly look into a hydrofoil, stingray has a great bolt on one that's dosn't need holes to be drilled. Also check out the spitfire 4 blade props from murcury there aluminum and priced very well! 4 blades = more water grip and faster plaining, one of the best investments I've made. After I got my spitfire prop I took of my hydrofoil and never put it back on or even considered it..........glad I didnt drill a bunch of holes...........

You say it is revving out? sounds like you have a bad hub that is slipping. I had a prop that would slip out under load and the motor would rev up. I use PROPMD out of Minnesota for my props, so far they have been great to deal with. I would try to borrow some different prop sizes to find out which will be best for your normal setup, then purchase the proper size. Rpms are important to watch.
