The 22mag might hit harder, but for longer distance hits on ground squirrels, I will take a 17rimfire every time. The 22magnum just doesn't have a great reputation for longer distance accuracy. And a .17 or .20 centerfire is a huge step up over any rimfire, including the 17WSM.
