Good Day
My first post being a new member residing in BC.
I thought this rforum would be the source for information I am seeking.
I would like to plan a waterfowl/gamebird hunt to AB this fall, outskirts from Calgary, NE,E and SE.
I left AB late 60s and only returned to hunt mid 70s.I have the itch again, time is moving on, maybe one final hunt or two. Lucky me.
Back in the day I had no problem hunting land on the outskirts of Calgary.Never got chased of off property and I cant recall seeing no trespassing signs, posted signs anywhere.
I realize times have changed but my concern is am I going to have problems in wqandering farmers land etc.If it could be painfull i might just give up the idea.
I remember getting off work in Calgary and shooting the night flight in Balzac,1965
Anyhow appreciate any suggestions/advice
Thanks

What do you mean wandering farmers land? Without permission do you mean?

Most landowners I have asked around NE Calgary are fairly open to waterfowl hunting. As long as the crop is off, I have rarely had an issue unless there is another group already going to hit the birds there.
This is assuming that you plan on ASKING for permission to access land...

The land does not have to be posted to be charged with trespassing. Times are different now. You must have permission.

Being a BC resident your hunter host should know where to take you. Anyways go to discover Albertas wild side website and there is lots of public bird hunting plots of land east and north east of Calgary.

The BEST place east of Calgary
It is on the Siksika reserve. They will sell you a licence, you still need permission from whom ever is farming the land. The crop may be long gone by the time you get here. The birds roost on Stobart lake and barely lift off when going to feed. The license is expensive but it is good for all season and you can bring as many friends as you want.
Call the band office and get the up to date info. The waterfowl hunting is superb.

No "wandering farmer's land". That's trespassing. Please ask for permission. That said, I haven't found it that difficult to get permission. I just don't show up the day of, in camo. IF you have a friend here they can do the advanced legwork for you. There are also a few places around here with Ducks Unlimited land so you don't have to worry about permission, just competition. Go early.
Good luck.

If it's not posted and no fence....don't assume anything. It's likely land which you still require permission to be on or hunt on.
There is no requirement to post or fence private property...never assume always know where you are.

You give up too easy boots,
I haven't specifically hunted birds in many years, correct me if wrong guys.
Can you not shotgun hunt birds on railroad allowances and gravel road ditches ?

Water fowl in Alberta us totally underutilized. Its a paradise for fowlers. So give up before you even start. By a land owner map and make a few calls, lots of little swamps and waterbodies on crown land too.
IIRC you dont need a hunter host got water fowl as it is federally managed??

No T Bark not a matter of giving up, a reality check. Consider I being a non resident, licenses, expenses etc and then the issuue of locating a area I would hunt, locating the land owner if I could, just too much of a hassle.
Put yourse3lrf in my situation before you comment that Im giving up.
Common sense dictates so before I go on a trip paying for all expenses which I* understand but beating around the bush trying to ask and gaining permission NO
By the way its Booters not Boots

Download Ihunter Alberta. You can buy the land owner map upgrade for $10 and that gives you contact information. You can also buy the crown land upgrade. Which let's you know where the biggest sections of crown are. So for $30 you have a pretty good start without even having to get off the couch. You can start calling land owners and that should give you a pretty good idea if it's gonna be worth investing more time and money into the trip.

No hunter host required to hunt birds.
Permission required to hunt private property, whether fenced or posted or not.
Calgary s larger than it was in 1965 and the outskirts have moved 40 miles or more in every direction.
What part of B.C. is home?
