You know that there used to be a catch pen in Red Rock Canyon where they live trapped lots of sheep and sent them all over the states and Canada. In and around '83 lung worm all but eliminated the rest . It came from southwest B.C. and the sheep have not recovered since. This ram is fantastic and I have been waiting for years to see one like that down there again. In the late '70's you could see some tremendous Rams in Red Rock just when you start in up to the north in those first few guts.

To add to the info already posted about the die off and lungworm, from what I understand it was passed from domestic sheep to bighorns, and it affects the old rams the most. It sure did a number on them. My Dad worked in Waterton Park as the trail crew formeman starting back in the early 70s and just retired about five years ago. He remembers seeing bands of rams in the backcountry that were 30 strong, with lots of big old bruisers. When that disease came through the big old rams were pretty much decimated. I worked in Waterton Park from the early 90s to about 2000 during the summers. I never saw anything like this big old boy. I am starting to see good numbers of rams up there again, and a few pretty good ones. It will be interesting to see what the next few years bring.

Thanks for the info.

Not knowing the history of the area, I was always curious, given the Blind Canyon record, why nobody ever seemed to mention that part of the province when it came to world-class rams.

Would you tell everyone where to find a big ram ? Seriously , this area isnt that big and it takes a pounding from a lot of hunters each fall .

x2, There are lots of hunters up there and rams don't have a huge chance of getting large unless there in the park. I imagine when that world record was killed there weren't near as many hunters and lots more feed.
