Fishing in fort Saskatchewan

Im working on my bucket list and have arrived at one im specifically excited about. Going sturgeon fishing in the NSR.

I just moved to fort Saskatchewan. I have no idea of fishing locations here but there must be because the river runs through.

Not asking for secret spots... just a couple of places to start??

Rivers quite high right now but the old bridge pillars on either side can be productive with bait on the bottom. Legends can be busy but rightfully so, it can be productive too especially for sturgeon. Otherwise, get out and explore there are paths along the river all through fort sask.

Drive right up to the river. Very easy access. Those directions I gave you is all you need to find the place. Good luck!

Golf course is on east side of river. I guess you should know that too... lol

I just went there.... took me 7 mins to drive. 15 people there. But all told me sturgeon are getting caught there.

Sturgeon tips/gear??

For a beginner it’s easy to say pickerel rig with worms. But ideally you will want( since you are targeting them) at minimum a medium/heavy rod, preferably heavy, 50 lb power pro or some other quality braided line,(or even heavier) and a sturgeon rig. I’ll throw up a pic on how to make the rig. Minnows can work well too but I prefer worms.

I'm in the same boat, just moved to the Fort in September. All my fishing gear is for fly fishing, is it any use for the NSR? Or should i get a new setup; ideally would like something that's versatile enough for the different fish that are in the river.

Your fly gear is great for goldeye. With minnow immitations you can also catch pike and walleye/sauger. One rod, I’d get a spincast set up. It will put you on all fish species.

There is good fly fishing in the NSR right in the city. I have caught pike, walleye, sauger and goldeye all on the fly in the city.

If you go east along the NSR from the museum, past the Lion's campground; there's a small stream that comes off the old ski hill. I see lots of people fish at the mouth of the stream where it collides withe NSR. I've seen some good size jacks and walleye come outta there!
