Iv got my first range finder its a Nikon archers choice. I find I cant hold it steady enough to range out past 650, and even that can be tough sometimes. I think it was around $300 or something. Im really happy with it. May be something to look into. And steadiness keep in mind.

I don't think you will find a 500$ rangefinder that will do 1000 yards on a tree or game. I have these bushnell fusion one mile binocular/rangefinder in one , they range out to 1850 yards on reflective about 1400 yards on a tree and 1100 yards on game cost me 1200$

You can get a binocular tripod mount and you will be steady at 1000 yards

Buy a used Leica CRF 1200. Lots of these available nowadays as their new ones have been out for a few years.

I've ranged game at 800 on the tundra( laying down using my pack as a rest).

You'll pick up mt sides at double that. Not sure if I got the sheep or the rock....either way ya gotta keep walking!! Great piece of kit for planning stalks as well as ranging critters.

Ive got the bushnell g-force dlx. Red readout very easy to see. Can adjust the brightness. Nice and compact. And unreal fast !!! Good for both archery and rifle. I was actually playing with it today and was ranging hay bales at 600 yds no problem. I can range the neighbors cows at 690 yds. After that its hard to hold still enough without a tripod for farther than that. Paid 470 for the camo model.

I had looked at the vortex ranger but didnt like that you had to push the button three times for a readout. Also very slow if ranging multiple targets. And i like the red display much better in the gforce.

I almost bought the leica but no bow mode was a deal breaker

That is very true. The model I suggested has no angle compensation built in.

The Nikon 7i for $380 will get you to 1000 on reflective targets and 650 on game.

There is no Bow mode in Leica 1600R as this one calculates angle past 99 yards but there is in CRF 1000R.
I have one of those for bowhunting as it nicely fits in shirt pocket.
CRF 1000R I've got on sale for around 600 Tax in.

My first Rangefinder was Leica 600 it is now 15 y old and used by my hunting buddy. It was about 600$ 15 y ago.

Default Leupold

I am a Leupold guy. I had a 800i and it worked great as far distance, but eventually the digital display only half showed up. I sent it to the Korth group and they replaced with a brand new 1000TBR and I have ranged up to 1000 yards, but easily up to 800 with consistency. Leupold quality is outstanding and when there is an issue, they fix or replace for free. I see Cabelas as the 1200TBRi for $650. As far as I am concerned, best bang for your buck.

Cabelas is now carrying "Pre-Owned" (or "Damaged Box") Leica products. Might be worth a look.

Details here.

Here's a good article on quality range finders.

Default Zeiss?

Has anyone had any experience with the Zeiss rangefinder?

Angle compensation is a nice feature for longer range rifle hunting however I don't find it is much of an issue in most bow hunting applications.

Lets assume most tree stands are 18-20 feel high - this means a standing archer would be shooting from approximately 25 feet. Even if one took a long shot at an animal (100m/300 feet) the difference is 1.04 feet in linear distance (i.e. the arrow flies an extra foot when shot from the tree at 25 feet than it would if shot from ground level).

Most archers I know shoot their animals well under 100 yards - usually well under 50 yards. so the above scenario would represent a really extreme shot.

1.04 extra feet for flight at 100 yards is not going to make any meaningful difference in point of impact.

I cannot shoot that accurately at 100 yards with a bow - perhaps everyone else here is much more skilled than I.

I dunno - unless I am missing something it seems as though this is something more important in long range precision shooting or when hunting sheep at longer ranges; in the context of bow hunting I just don't see mathematically how this is significant ...bow ranges are simply too short to make a difference.

So in that case I don't see why the Leica 1600B is useless to a bowhunter.

Interested in people experiences with the Zeiss though?

Nice in theory but YMMV.

I think you would be better served with the bino/rangefinder combo as it is not attached to just one gun.

As well those Eliminators weigh around two pounds.

I bought the Vortex Ranger 1000.

The range is supposed to be up to 500 for game, but i find its reliable to about 700-800 yards.

The bad part is that mine died after two hard years. The good part is that with the lifetime warranty, I got a brand new replacement. Not many electronics offer a lifetime warranty.

Not the best optics in that price point, cold weather concerns, heavy bulky and awkward, mated to just one rifle.

However that scope may be a humdinger on a varmint rifle in a gopher patch.

Default Vortex Ranger 1000

Great unit and can't beat the warranty. Lifetime no fault on the entire thing including the electronics!! If you read any of the others their warranties are no where as good. Was good investment for 500.
