Anyone use a 18V Electric Drill with a 10" Auger - Looks like it would work!
Will be getting a 18V Hammer Drill & am considering buying a new 10" Ion auger bit for less than $150.00 here in the USA.
Has anyone tried this combo for drilling 10" holes, how would these 18V drills perform with the 10" ION auger bit?
I know the Ion auger bit is big & heavy, I'm hoping this combo would have no difficulty cutting through 10-12" ice maximum.
That said, I'm also concerned it could burn out the drill, too.
There's nothing on the Internet or YouTube for reference, it appears no one has attempted to do this.
Thoughts ?
Cheers
David

Any of the new augers for use with drills have plastic flighting and weight around 6 pounds so I think that the ion auger will be too heavy.

I checked a thread I started on IceShanty and was suprised to see two replies.
Lightningz post .... I’ve built 5 drill/auger setups over the past 2 years. All of them utilized the Clam plate and Milwaukee drills. The first one I built was for myself and I went with the Ion 8” bit and quick coupler. This setup works fantastic and it has never given me any issues. The next two were also using a Milwaukee drill drill and Clam plate. These two were built using the Ion 10” auger bits. These also have been great with zero issues. I also built 2 setups with old Mora 8” hand auger bits. These also have had zero issues. I elected to use the Ion quick coupler on my setups so I can swap bits and utilize the ice anchor tool. I hope this answers your question.
PIKE FISHERMAN post .... I just used my Ridgid Octane and Strikemaster 10" gas auger bit. It worked great. We had around 8" of when I tried them. Initially, I had just planned on messing around with the combo, but quickly realized how well it worked. I plan on using it early to mid season when I Pike or Lake Trout fish. Probably won't when we get 2+ ft of ice.
Heres a video of me using the 10":
https://youtu.be/sI_e2TOQUeE
I sent both of them a reply if they ever tried drilling two 10" connected holes, hoping for a response.
Also hoping someone here will reply with some first hand experience with an 18V electric & 10" auger bit.

My thoughts, too, however, I was also thinking of removing some of the metal spiral and shortening the shaft.
Watching that fellas video using a Ridgid & 10" Strikemaster made me smile.

I have used my dewalt 18v Xrp for a few years, the last two years with an 8” bit.
Last week I broke the trigger handle off because there is too much torque, especially when it catches as you break thru.
Important note to self!!!
Always use the extra handle to support the torque, i haven’t been using mine.
Don’t use a drill that doesn’t have an extra handle
I had posted a video way back, with my 6” bit. Idk if it’s still available

Looks like it works.
Thoughts:
-10” hole has over 50% more surface area than an 8”hole
-have an extra set of blades in case
-careful with the kickback when the drill breaks through
-have a plan B (manual auger) in the truck in case something goes south

Fisherdan ... lots of back-up, I have Scott's Eskimo (almost new) Model HC-40 Propane and my 10" Jiffy Model 30 that's 25 plus years old that still works great but not as great as an 18V or 20V Electric drill set up.
I'm now leaning towards buying the 10” StrikeMaster Lazer auger bit Model LPD-10 vs the 10” Ion, they’re a bit more money but Scott reminded me the blades are better on the Strikemaster than the Ion and I understand they’re a little lighter, too.
Pike Fisherman from Skowhegan, ME replied to a similar Ice Shanty Thread I posted & advised the following in response to a few of my Q's.
Quote" I'm 100% confident the Octane - SM 10" will make through 16-24" of ice no problem. Like I said on that first hole, I feathered off the trigger a little because it was cutting so fast and easy. As far as a little slush pocket, I'm sure it would do fine with that as well.
As far as the overlapping holes with the 10", I'm fairly confident it will work, but haven't tired it. I did use my 8" SM Lite Flite with over lapping holes and that worked awesome. I can give the 10" a try here soon. May be a week or so but ill try it and report back." UN-Quote.
I'm waiting for some follow up info from this fellow, will share it here.
Cheers
David

I still think the Strikemaster lite flite is the way to go. Double 8" holes

Used Scott's 8" S/M in December, still found it difficult to sight fish Whites, they come in quick in 4-6 fow & most of the time I wasn't ready for the hook set. When I went out solo & used my 10" Jiffy 30 ... holes were much larger, I had a few extra seconds to twitch or hold & limited out vs getting 1 or 2.

A fella from Minnesota posted the following video on my Ice Shanty Thread, he has a Rigid Octane 18V drill with a 9ah battery & 10" Ion auger, I was amazed how easy it was to cut 10" overlapping holes, it was just slow compared to the StrikeMaster 10" lazer which cuts faster.
https://youtu.be/nw8eTRbRwS4
Going to pull the trigger on the 10" Strikemaster Lazer auger, unfortunately, & won't be able to test drive it out until mid-April when I get home.

I just ordered the strikemaster cordless drill adapter for my 10” strikemaster lazer pro auger, I’m going to try it with Milwaukee fuel. We have some serious ice up here in Fort McMurray right now so it should be a good test . I’m not sure if the adapter comes with one of those discs to stop the auger from going under but I can just use one of my frisbees I have on hand.

FHP .... after your field test it, I would appreciate an update, particularly if you can drill a few overlapping holes.
You read my mind, the StrikeMaster electric drill adapter #NDA 2-3 does not come with a safety disc, I found a Frisbee at Walmart and plan to garage engineer a shaft clamp to hold it on to auger.
Cheers

I burned out an 18v Makita with a 8" auger on the first hole. If that helps.

Don't know which Makita drill model but suspect you had insufficient torque with the model you picked to use.
Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1/2 hammer drill with 1,200 in lbs of torque will not burn out on you. And if you top that off with a 12 amp hour battery you won't run out of power either. Expensive

No problem , hopefully I can get out soon . The adapter showed up today so I might try and rig up the setup.

Here’s it rigged up all I need to do was drill out a large washer I had in the garage using a step bit to 7/8”. Seemed to work pretty good.

I just saw this video on YouTube and immediately thought of this thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw8eTRbRwS4
He is testing a 10" Ion drill bit with an 18V Rigid drill. It looks like it cuts easily!
I bought the Strikemaster 40V specifically because I wanted a 10" bit but it looks like 18V drills are keeping up.

That should save it from going down the hole, looks like a Tour Player Frisbee, nice work on the mod.
For your consideration, I posted these pic's on Scott's "Eskimo Pistol Bit Thread" they're from a guy on the Ice Shanty Forum who modified his adapter because he was experiencing a slight wobble in his auger, grinding down the top edge of the adapter solved the problem.
Tks for posting.

Tks for posting info/link .... I seen this video on the Ice Shanty Forum, I was impressed to see how easy it was to drill 2 x 10" overlapping holes.

I'm hiding from winter in Palm Springs, it was 74F/23C this afternoon, I've been selling some used golf equip & building up my PayPal, finding some smoken hot deals on 18V Drills, 10" augers & adapters delivered N/C to my door. New toys will be fun to play with, no ice here except in my bevies, have to wait until we get back in mid-April to test it out.
Stay warm everyone.

Since we arrived in Palm Springs I was lucky to sell a bunch of used golf equipment and grow my PayPal account, all my b-new new toys arrived, great prices, free shipping to the door & no tax or duty. Back in Sylvan in mid-April to test out the combo & ready for next ice season.
Can't believe the prices of goods/services in the USA.
Milwaukee 2804-22 M18V Fuel with two 5 ah batteries - $200.00
Spare Milwaukee knock-off 9 ah battery - $51.00
StrikeMaster 10” Lazer Ice Auger Drill LPD-10 - $179.99
Custom Drill Adapter - $23.95
All in for $455.00 USD and covered by golf club sales, nice.
Looks like the cold weather back home is moving on, looking forward to seeing a few more posts & pic’s.
Cheers

That ice auger and drill set up looks nice, but also pretty out of place! Only ice out there is in your drinks! Maybe you could go to the local hockey rink and try it out

It was time to get myself an auger/flyte this year instead of borrowing and on suggestion from a neighbour I went with the 18V drill setup, but not really the way it was meant.
I have a Milwaukee M18 Hole Hawg right angle sort of drill, lots of power, that I paired with the above mentioned adapter for a 1/2" chuck. Immediately disliked the adapter on account of the top not being beveled and the hole being a few thousandths too small to fit the bits allen bolt through. It is also hardened so drilling it is a massive pain. I really wanted a 10" hole and the flytes meant for drills, plasticky ones, are all 8" and not really all that much cheaper. I managed with the adapter and got the bit working but it certainly struggled in 16" of ice and I was worried about burning the tool out so I bought a used 33cc Eskimo Auger and it seems to work great. At least it did this weekend.
