Default Jumbo Perch

Hi fellow fishermen,

I’m new to both perch fishing and icefishing and am hoping to find some this year during hard water season. Will you please answer a few questions for a newbie?

Are there perch in Alberta greater than 10”?

Do perch tend to be in weedy areas?

Thanks,
Mtnhunter

Yes we have perch at 13 inch up to 14 inch

I don't find them in shallow weedy areas, last time I bought perrch in 1 feet of water along the shore was days before nakamun lake was winterkilled

Bigger than 10”? You bet there is.

My experience has been in winter they go deep. In summer they school off the edge of the weeds.

Thanks for the reply. Any suggestions for locating them deep without a flasher/Hummingbird?

Thanks for the note! Any tips for areas of lakes to focus on to try to catch one? Since I’m just getting into icefishing I don’t have a depth finder

I don’t have electronics. My techniques for locating fish are;

1. Fish in areas that I have caught fish in before.
2. Drill holes and try and catch fish. If I don’t catch I try again in other area.

I never ask people where the fish are or what they are biting on or how they found them. My intention is to catch more fish than anybody else so experience has taught me doing what others do wrong probably isn’t the direction I want to go. Finding and perfecting is 100% of the fun.

Drill 30 to 100 holes either deep to shallow or grid over a flat. Move from hole to hole dropping your lure till you get a bite. You can look down the hole and if shallow/clear enough you can see them down there. Not sure how else you would do it without a flasher. Thats what we used to do without a flasher while we were fishing blind years ago. There were more fish back then though. Now you really benefit from electronics. Good luck. Some lakes are easy and some lakes are hard. Just the name of the game.

Don't drill 30-100 holes if you only have a hand auger though hahaha

This.

If you aren’t finding them deep, don’t be afraid to find some shallow cattails close to deep water. Caught some of my biggest perch in 1-3fow amongst the cat tails.

Hit Slave lake, lots of perch in there. Like Brandon suggests start drilling holes and try different depths.

Another tip.

Be extra careful when drilling in shallow not to bottom out on the sand or dirt, you’ll fry your auger blades.
