I have called probably 8-10 like that over the years. It wasn't necessarily in a 'gopher' field but where the badger had holes dug. I used a high pitched distress call like a cottontail.
I don't usually shoot any preds through the summer unless they are a problem.
Badgers however do not get a pass. Too hard on livestock legs if only one horse has a problem.
I bought a custom call from a friend one time. It was July but I was excited to try it. I hated the sound of the call and it was a little hard to blow. not up to my usual standards. I also had bought a Ruger #1 in 223 at a gunshow and wanted to try it. I had mounted a scope and sighted it in so was ready to go.
It was freaking hot out in the open pasture. I happened on some badger holes and decided to set up there as it was a mound that offered some field of view. I started to call and within seconds I heard snorting on my left.
A badger was half out of his hole looking around. I was wearing my ghillie and I edged the rifle around for the shot. 50feet away.
I lipsqueaked and he came out of the hole. He was so close I just sighted down the barrel and shot him. He was DRT but did the usual twist and squeal.
When he did a second badger came out to see what the commotion was. I shot that one too..
I sat there for a couple minutes collecting my thoughts and grinning. I went back to the call and two series later I had a pair of coyotes come in. With one trotting in at about 90 yards and one at 40, I shot the farthest one first. The close one spun and took off the same way she had come in, but stopped when she got to the other one doing the death spin. She joined him right there.
Now while calling a badger isn't really unusual, calling and killing two is, and getting a double on coyotes is unusual but doing all this with a Ruger #1 is a bit of a challenge as the rifle is a single shot for those not familiar with this model.
Oh and the call. I hated it, but it did call in coyotes nearly every time I used it.
