Default West-Central Alberta Lake Help Needed!

Hey guys,

I've been planning a canoe trip up to the Northeast of Edmonton for a few weeks, and the weather forecast has SEVERELY degraded up there today.

North Sask and Red Deer River flow rates are too high.

So, I'm looking for a smaller wilderness lake where I can canoe and set up camp around the lake.

Seems like a dearth of this in the area. I've seen medicine lake, anyone know if there's random camping around the lake up there?

Any help or direction would be hugely appreciated, feel free to PM me if you don't want the spot posted, I'm a respectful camper.

Anyone? Willing to drive about 4 hours from Edmonton, so call it Jasper to Calgary.

Anyone know of any little lakes that would be appropriate for canoeing?

Default nordegg

Goldeye lake just past Nordegg is a great spot. Has basic campsites and is just off the highway. Very small lake so you are not at risk if the wind picks up.

Medicine lake is very busy with ATVers.

Swan lake west of Caroline is pretty nice. You can paddle to the east end and camp if you aren't into the camp site.

Or Yellowhead south of Caroline. Has a island guys paddle to and camp. Not a very big lake.

Do you plan on fishing too?

Ah Swan lake looked great, but fishery closed till June 15.

Goldeye lake or Medicine Lake I guess. Goldeye might be a bit small for random camping? Hard to tell from google satellite.

If you don't mind driving between camp and the lake try out Talbot Lake in Jasper and camp at Whistlers. About a 20 minute drive between the two

Twin Lakes - just outside of Rocky Mtn. House. Camping plus a nice body of water for a canoe.... may also hook into a decent rainbow.

Jackfish lake - approximately 40km west of Rocky on hwy 11. Campground and lake are about 2km off the highway.... signs on the highway.. Nice lake suitable for canoe and may hook into a northern or two.

If you want go for a bit longer of a drive, Peppers lake is really nice. About 50km south of Nordegg on the trunk road. Also signs on the trunk road. Awesome canoe lake, nice campground and you are in the mountains. Nice camp spots right next to the lake.... Just have to walk down the slope a bit. May hook into a nice Brookie or 2.

Good luck

Medicine Lake is a nice spot. Some bush camping available. Like previously said, lots of quads around there destroying the trails.
