Default 2 1/2 years for loaded pistols?

Ok there is more to the story but the judge definitely seemed to make an example.

That’s a little over the top.
He seemed to be such a nice guy....

“The judge noted that Halpenny had been ordered while on bail to not have contact with either Jimmy Melvin Jr. or Jimmy Melvin Sr., "both of whom are notorious and violent crime figures in this city."

This paragraph could really use some more information for the purpose of clarification. Was he frequently in contact with both of these individuals prior to being charged? Are they friends of his?

Near the end of the story it said he stopped caring about renewing his licence. If he had restricted then they probably checked into his possessing of pistols and expired licence. What kind of renewal notifications or how long they waited, who knows.
