Default Time to winterize the boat.

This weekend ,time to flush out the water change oil in engine and leg .
Wash it and tarp it .
Most of all remove that Sonar so the transducer does not crack when it drops to below - 30.
Next following weekend Elk hunting !

Is there a real chance the "transducer" could crack? I always remove he monitor but have always left the transducer in place (what a job to remove this every year). has anyone experienced an cold weather induced fault in the transducer?

Lots of nice days yet...

I hope everyone has a few good days left on the water .

Just a winter note .... somehow I had an ignition coil fail on
me somehow between last Oct. to This spring while my boat
was storage.
Merc rep says it may have cracked the housing during winter.
It was covered under Warrenty so I'm ok with that .

Kinda makes me think about the long term effects of the -35
has on all my boat stuff...

End of October for me too, good fishing left yet. New Tracker this year with a 2 stroke which I love. Don't forget the stabilizer in the gas along with making sure water is drained (just be sure you motor is upright). Also that it's covered. Not much to winterizing. mine.

Yup my transducer ****ed up and a few others i know also .
What you will notice is the dept will start to flash on /off and will give you false readings etc.

DAMN I had no idea transducers don't like the cold!
Mine is glued through the transom..no way I'm getting it out.

Is there any way to protect them without removing?

Sensing a little sarcasm there? Lol.

Wabamun + October = awesome pike fishing!

Finished our second garage last summer 1100sq ft. A little fuel stabalizer is all I have to do. In floor heat, tv, stereo, beer fridge. I foresee some winter days in geerage fixing boat seats and some minor tune ups here and there!

Default Transducer

Easy Peezy,
Remove the transducer from the bracket at the boat, put it into a HEAVY plastic bag filled with RV antifreeze and tie the bag off. Set it into the splash well and forget it for the winter.

Put the boat away, not a chance. The water has to be HARD before it goes into storage.
Good luck and tight lines.

Agreed , still a good 6 weeks left ! Never ever seen a transducer break unless acted upon by some external force. Never taken mine off and never will.

x2. Never in 30 yrs have I removed the transducer. As for the tip with putting it in a bag of antifreeze. What will that do? Still gets to -35 outside. Doesn't matter if it's in antifreeze or not.

Was at Bass Pro chatting with the Tracker tec guys about replacing a brake cable and they mentioned they will be offering a "winterize package". Asked what it will entail besides what I could do myself but they said they where still figuring put the package. Maybe fogging the carb in addition to what has been mentioned here.

Pull plugs fog it. Or oil for dfi. Then straight up down. Drain leg oil. I spend more on the little things such as tip boat up in air then. Let drain blow out live well drains. Etc. If really fussy run rv antifreeze down flush port. But i have never done that. Though i have opened the flush port to let it drain.

Im currious what guys do for moisture control inside. There is always water in your boat. They sweat a little each time u use and accululate water inside. This can saturate your floors etc. Depends on how long it sits.

What he said...as for moisture, I always leave compartments slightly open (fully open if possible) to promote drying. Save some of those larger packets of desiccant and leave one in each enclosed area. If tarped, make sure it has sufficient vents for air movement. I find those outdoor portable shelters keep a lot of moisture inside, building storage is better even if unheated.

Ok I ended up doing it myself.

Changed the gear oil. Couldn't find some "marine gear oil" so I found one that was between 80-90 SAE which my manual said
to use.

Changed the oil with some 4 stroke 10w40, it said it was for motorcycles but thought it would work too. The manual said 4 stroke 10w40 so I assumed it would be ok.

Sprayed fog oil into my engine.

Didn't use any anti freeze cause my outboard is stored in a heated area.

Repainted all the scuffs on the leg with rust protective paint.

Re-greased the prop shaft and other moving parts.

I didn't do anything to the carburetor cause I don't know how. How often do I neeed to clean that?

Also I did not run the motor mainly because the gas I use is already treated with fuel stabilizer and when I leave the water I always run the engine till all the gas is burnt.

Did I miss anything?
