ACA/APOS Ministers Tag Auction

I just got an email from the ACA with the opportunity to bid on three new Ministers tags. An Antelope, moose or turkey. Interesting!

This will be an online auction. Register and participate.

I made a couple comments a few weeks back to a friend that I imagined Alberta would somehow drop the ball on setting up the new Ministers tags correctly. And wasnt surprised one bit.

First off, why wouldnt they create a resident raffle that coincides at the same time as the MSL auction tags, or ensure that the first hunts introduced were introduced to residents, and then build to promote the auction ones for the following season? These hunts and the planning seem horribly rushed and not well thought out, and thus wont help drive the value at auction.

Second....what does buying a Ministers antelope tag allow you to do, other than jump a couple zones and hunt with hundreds of people at the same time during the one-week rifle season?? What a frickin joke. Why wouldnt AB look at extending the season for antelope to be able to hunt at least a month BEFORE the season opens? A guy doesnt need to look far to realize that all you're buying is an antelope allocation in this case.

Moose, same thing. Where is the advantage in season dates, etc.

In Arizona if you win a tag in the super raffle, you get to hunt for 365 days.

Yep, exactly. Even opening up an antelope hunt for a month before would give a really nice benefit. I sure bet guys are lining up to hunt the regular 1 week season when they could just purchase the allocation from an outfitter if they wanted that option....lol

It’s to generate funding for wildlife and hopefully it does exactly that

There are those who will view it as a worthwhile opportunity and I don’t care if the money going to wildlife is from a resident or none resident myself. Personally I see nothing wrong with it

This is not about creating a hunting opportunity it’s about generating money for the resource we all use

Thats precisely my point. They could have done MUCH better job of creating more value in these tags by just doing some of the most obvious things to create a reason for bidders to spend. Didnt seem like they really wanted to create much funding for them or put much effort in rushing them to auction unfortunately.

This was a swing and a miss.

I am 100% in support of auction tags and generating funds for wildlife through them. But this stinks of an idea being rushed to auction with minimal planning to actually create value out of it.

There is always room for improvement and sending constructive feedback/suggestions through the correct channels might set the ball in motion

If you had any smarts, you could have came on here. Thrown out a suggestion and had probably 25 really good ideas in 1 day.

Good idea, allow someone to hunt a month earlier for antelope while the guys who have waited 15 years stand on the sidelines and watch the biggest trophy get taken. Every “great new idea” has a good side and a bad side.

That's a good question. Very disappointing. A few years ago we fought hard, and won, to get AFGA to change the raffle rules so that the "rich guys" couldn't buy up all the raffle tickets on day 1, and let the "regular people" at least have a chance. Now, with these new licenses, they're not even going to bother with the raffle. Brutal.

Its a double edge sword
People want the dollars to go towards conserving the resource but then in the same breath they are mad because one person bought all the tickets


I just dont think these 3 new tags were very well thought out
There is no real incentive for residents or non residents to buy them. Only advantage to residents is you get to jump the line. But why would I pay a bunch of money for an alberta antelope tag, when you can get a better hunt for less money in the states? If you were able to avoid the rat race, then its worth it. Same season, not a chance!

There is no real purpose to having these tags the way they are set up

MSL Raffle
Through my emails to my MLA (Ron Orr=useless) and AEP I received a call on May 10th, from Mr. Besko, Executive Director of Hunting and Fishing Branch, Forestry Environment and Parks. Told me there will be a resident raffle for all six species, additionally the Moose and Pronghorn raffles will have two tags/winners drawn. Said he couldn't provide any further details at this time but expected information to be released soon.
Now over two weeks later, very disappointing that we are still without any details. I'm sure the election is the excuse.
