I would suggest not to bother coming. It's not that you can't find open water that is very close to shore, the problem is all the loose ice pieces floating down in the current. We have had some cooler temps at night and there is a lot of loose apple/canteloupe size ice pieces forming. Enough had formed to cause a small ice jamb between the weir and 17ave overpass beside deerfoot trail a couple days ago. I'm not sure if that one has since broken up or not, but you would constantly be dodging ice pieces with your line no matter where you went.

theres a big hole down by the bridge, been dying to wet a line, but its way out from shore wont drop a line off the bridge, kind of hard to lift a 50 inch sturgeon that high up

I was out today. South of the weir, it is almost all open, but there are many ice shelves. I found myself wading quite a bit.

The fishing was awesome. I found a school of rainbows. They were even sipping midges on the surface. I thought of putting on a dry, but I could only the imagine the frustration that I would have trying to tie on a size 20 hook with numb fingers.

I landed 10 bows and a pig of a brown.

I fished under the Bowness train bridges many a time all winter long, the bottom of the river would be covered with ice, as well as the boulders on the shores, but the rockies would still be biting, if you could ignore the frostbite long enough to reel them in. didnt see many trout in the winter though, but trout are for girls anyways

When he finally gets his record, I'm sure he'll forget about all of his skunking's.

caught one in Montgomery when I was a teenager, way back when, was half an ounce under the old record. caught a lot of big whites around the train bridges, many between 3 and 4 pounds, there are/were a lot of fatties in there. thats when I started using 4 pound and even 2 pound mono, caught a lot more and its a real challenge landing them in the heavy current. some big trout along the ledge on the Bowness side just downstream of the foot bridge.

This thread is a week old now. Im wondering if anyone has a current report on the Bow since its been a cold cold week. And its warming up so I would imagine ice would be breaking off again. Is it worth the trip to head down there this week?

I was actually about to post the exact same request. As of two days ago, the river was frozen near Crowchild.

What is the river like downstream of Elbow confluence?

There's still a lot of ice floating down the bow below the Calfrobe bridge. I would fish with a partner if you decide to head out, it's pretty dangerous unless you are very experienced at this time of year.

Bow is wide open, from bonybrook downstream lots of open spots. Wading is the key, much safer than standing on ice shelves. Going out tommorow.
