This guy,,but take your time looking and you may get a nice 28 in one, there is a huge difference in the wood and when you find one with great wood its love at first site. Id like one too lol

Put a rail on a #1----blasphemy!! I just needed an extended base ring for the rear one. Burris makes extended bases for adapting Weaver mount rings to the #1 as well. Ideal thing would be to pull the quarter rib and replace it with a rib that uses the Recknagel swing off mounts, but, dat be BIG bucks.

There is a member here selling a .308 with nice wood, but I can't do it until mine are gone.
I'll just leave this here as an example of a nice custom, from muzzle to recoil pad.

Very nice Cat!
I will be taking my time in order to find the one that grabs me. I have seen some pictures of the stainless with laminate. Kind of like that to.

The finishing touch on the 270 would be to send it to Turnbull or Tyler or someone that does good case colouring, That is a nice stock on that gun.

I sold that 270 a long time ago , and although it was a gorgeous rifle it was in a 1 B barrel taper which is heavier than I like , and of course , 270!!
I have asked a fine gunsmith friend (who has written a book on case hardening )
As well as Oskar Kobb ( who does all the case gardening for Ralf Martini) and the
Process us would put my current Ruger out of commission longer than I would like.

Ya, it does likely take a year or two, or even three, to get that done these days. And it isn't cheap.
I get to actually put mine together today. have rings, have new scope, have a box of ammo to set it up with. Weather is reasonable for tomorrow. I'll go do a 25yd boresight at the indoor range today and head out to the farm tomorrow with some ladder rounds to chrono it and see what sort of barrel it has on it. Would be nice to get a fast one again. Putting a Z3 2.5-10 on it with the BRX reticle. Try it with a 140 Rem factory PSP, a 140 Nos BT with WW760 and RL19 to see what it does with those to start with. Had a Magnetospeed for a couple of yrs now, finally get to try that out as well. Wouldn't work on the DR, so, I'll try it out on this. Also check it against the Oehler.

7-08. I forgot how nice those are to shoot. That thing is so easy to handle. Don't have to think, put the crosshair on there and just shoot. Trigger on it is ok, isn't sloppy anyway.
Took a Crosman SAA pellet pistol with me, I forgot how much fun it is to watch the pellets track into the target too. Played with that at 10yds whilst cooling the barrel on the 7-08. Handy having that new place in the NE now, 15min drive depending on the lights.

Excellent middle of the road cartridge for sure!
The 1A and the RSI are my best pics for sure , I have owned several 1v’s as well
As the Tropicals and 1B’s but the light sporter is my all time favorite

That is a pretty one. The one I just got is mediocre at best, I call it G1-1/2S wood. It isn't plain Jane, but, nothing special, either, One side OK, other is sort of OK, it has a bit of character, not much, but, a bit. It was an improvement over the 450-400 though. That was sort of a G1S at best.

the ruger number one is as nice of rifle as they come
myself personally I like the 1885 win or B78 brownings better
I bought a 375 H&H and new shilan barrel on it chambered in a 300RUM , kinda of crazy thing to do but it shoots way more accurate then I can, put a 6x20 x50 burris tactical scope on it , its so nice I haven't ever taken it hunting only to the rifle range,

In guns, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder

I don't think they are ugly by any stretch, I am just a huge wood and blued No 1 fan. The stainless/laminate is too modern and utilitarian for my liking in such a timeless and classic design.

I could live with stainless and a birdseye/fiddleback maple stock. I still have a severe hankering for a Stevens 44-1/2 as well. Thanks to the fact, or maybe foiled by it, that I have one, I never got in a hurry to order one from CPA. I looked hard at them a few yrs ago, but, the urge to buy the SxS was stronger at the time. Not sure how much longer Shuttleworth will be building those. 30-40 Krag or 348 win would be fun. An as a custom gun goes, a reasonable price.

I've owned and shot Ruger Number 1's since 1978.

My first was a used 1B in 7mm Rem Mag with spectacular wood produced in 1973.

My second was a new 1B in 22-250 purchased from Lever Arms for $400.00 with fence post plain walnut.

My latest a 1A in 22 Hornet with colour case hardening

I have not purchased a # 1 since without at least seeing pictures.

My opinion after owning quite a few.

First consideration is wood quality, second cartridge desireability, then price.

Lucky for us Ruger has chambered the # 1 in a number of less common cartridges.

Some of the more memorable ones I have owned or still own.

1A 22 Hornet

1A 222 Remington

1S 218 Bee

1B 225 Winchester

1AH 25.06 24" barrel no sights one of the best balanced #1's

K1A 6.5x55 (walnut stainless) it has a great new home

1A 275 Rigby with New Zealand Walnut

1A 280 Rem

RSI in 243, 257 Roberts, 6.5x55, 270,7x57, 300 RCM

1A 30-30

1S 38-55

1S 405 Winchester

1S 475 Linebaugh

1D Lyman Commerative 45-70

The more common chamberings 22-250 ,270,30-06, 7mm Rem Mag,300 Win Mag do not hold their value well.

Neither does the 1H in 458 Win, though these are often like new with few rounds fired.

1S 45-70 Is always a lot of fun to shoot as well as the 1H in 375 H&H.

With limited yearly production and new prices exceeding the $2000.00 #1 have become a even smaller niche market.

Good news for buyers in today's economy #1 can be found for $900-$1200, no so good for the sellers.

They are a classy and cool gun.

500gr @2450 will let you know who is home in the #1, it is a bit light for that kind of stuff. But, I do understand that it was there to do and had to be done. I thought about doing one 400gr load @ 2400 or so with the 450-400, then decided it just wasn't worth it.

What caliber would you suggest is the best fit for the No1 ?
I have read a lot of horror stories as far as accuracy issues with these. And of course great reviews.
Would you mind offering up your opinions, suggestions and experience with this rifle. Should I buy new or used?
Thanks

Could anyone point me in the direction to find one of these beautiful mark 1s. I’ve was looking for one this June to buy for myself as a graduation/ birthday present, Christmas is around the corner and I’d love to treat myself... lol. Thanks guys!

EDIT: I forgot to mention I’m looking for a .35 whelen, .270 win, or .280 rem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here you go...

https://store.prophetriver.com/ruger...-s-n-13446187/

They also have a 280 and oddly enough a 6.5 Creedmoor with really nice lumber.
