Default What makes a pike to strike? (Warning: Fish guts)

Hi All,

This is the first picture I am posting on the forum ( finally I have decided). I would like to know what makes a pike to strike? A hunger? As you can see from the picture fish had a good dinner before taking my spoon. As far as I know spoon is supposed to immediate a wounded fish.

I once caught a 8 lb pike out of Coal lake that had eaten a sucker that was so big its tail was still sticking out his throat and into his mouth. He bit on a large sardine that was in the 10-12" range, I have no idea what he figured he was going to do with that sardine had it not been attached to my fishing line. The portion of the sucker that he was able to swallow was digested pretty good so he'd had it in there awhile. In the meantime I wonder how many other fish that pike had caught and wondered why the heck he couldnt swallow them.

This is interesting . . . I guess this leaves "aggression" as the most likely reason it struck?

All of us around here suffer from that exact same affliction!

Good call. The could certainly explain while they'll try to cram in more than will fit.

Default pike

i have seen pike floating on the surface of lakes, with other pike , slightly smaller , sticking out of their mouths, just the tails sticking out. i guess they drowned when something that big goes into their trap....

It's extremely common. Especially fo smaller pike.
I believe it's a natural instinct since they are such voracious feeders.
If you dangle it in front of their nose, its just natural to open up and say ahhhhh.

Try it when you see a pike on the shore, just dangle something(anything really) just over his nose, and bam...he'll nail it.
