Default Newbie fly fisher

What fly rod setup do you use when you go fishing is small windy lakes. Like what weight size is your rod and the line you use. Im very new to fly fishing and i was given a 7 weight rod for my bday and i dont know how effective this is for the type of lake i go to. I just want a jumping off point so that i know where to start cause im such a newbie to fly fishing. The rainbows i fish 4 are 3-6lbs

In my opinion a 6 or 5 weight is a good all round trout set up. Nothing wrong with a 7 weight though, which is probably a good choice in windy conditions. Sometimes I even use an 8 weight on the Bow when I'm chucking heavy nymphs or streamers. If the fish you are catching are 3 - 6 pounds, a 7 weight is probably a good choice. 3-6 pounds.... where are you fishing my friend?

I like my 6wt, and i really like to have a wt forward single taper line. Also on lake I like to use an intermediate sinking line vs a floating line. it has a little more weaght to it.
