Default How to register a firearm to a minor.

This past week I completed my CFSC and my Hunters Ed. and I am wanting to get my Youth White-Tailed Dear license but obviously I need a firearm. My grandfather left me his rifle and now my thinking is that I need to register it under my name and im not sure how or even if I have to do that. Any help on this would be much help! Thanks in advance!

What registry are you referring to? The LGR has been dead for a few months now.

At this point I feel it is only natural to ask.

Did you pass the CFSC?

I'm sorry but if you passed that course and missed that point...obviously...it and the test are a joke.

If you're referring to me, yes I passed the test, and yes the course and test are a joke. I knew everything in it before I was 10 years old.

The LGR died this past spring.

You don't have to register non-restricted rifles or shotguns anymore.
That's kinda what I said in my first post.

Like the other posts said the registry is dead. I may be mistaken on the details cause I'm only looking into it for my kids right now but a youth could not register a gun when there was such thing. You can not buy one now. To go hunting you can borrow one. From what I was told when talking to a person at a CFSC booth at the last Sportsman's show, after you pass you should have had a meeting with local CFO about what restrictions are placed one you regarding distance from a adult you can be if any is needed to be present.

Ok just to clarify, I dont have to do any kind of registration for my firearm and if it was hunting season and I shot my buck (etc), I would be legal? (I know this is a dumb Q but I just want to be safe)

When I said "completed" I meant passed. They never talked about what we do after we completed it. So I thought id ask.

You still need to be Supervised By an adult with a PAL

Ok.
But didn't they teach you about the legal requirements and the differences between different classes of firearms?

Of course it is a joke. It always has been and always will be. How can 20 minutes or 4 hours in a classroom compare to time on a range with a mentor? I mean really only the government could come up with something so stupid.
Just another box to check off that is all.

So no one wants to answer his question? Just get into a pi$$ing match with each other. You are not required to register non restricted weapons anymore. But you need a PAL to be in possesion of one, carrying, transporting, having one in your house. As long as you or someone in your house has a PAL they just have to say the gun is theirs. Hopefully your PAL comes in soon. Good luck hunting.

Post #15 tells the tale. You still need an adult with you at arms length etc. As suggested ask the CFO for definition and allowable distances etc. I know this may suck after you go through all the hoops to do things properly but restrictions are put on youth hunters for safety reasons and a learning period. Wardens may have differing opinions on how you are supervised. I hope this helps and good on you for wanting to hunt properly.

-No regisrty anymore(already covered)
-Since your looking for a Youth WT licence you must be between the ages of 12 and 17 then.
From the Alberta regs here is what is written reguarding youth hunters;
hunters under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, a legal guardian or by a person 18 years of age or older who has the written permission of the parent or legal guardian. If a youth turns 18 during the hunting season, they can continue to hunt using their valid licence.
so it would be much easier to have the person 18+ or your parent holding the valid PAL, and you being closely mentored.

The other option is to apply for your Minors Firearms Licence. (The RCMP's wesite is getting revamped so I'll try to get this right.)
This would allow you to be between 12 and 17 and be able to purchase ammo, and have a firearm while not directly supervised, but still accompanied by someone fully licenced (18+)

Read his OP. This is what he says "I am wanting to get my Youth White-Tailed Dear ".
If he is getting a youth WT tag He is clearly under 18, And He will Still Need to be with a Adult with a PAL. He can not legally posses his own firearm.
I cant believe that many people missed His youth.

Good for you for taking an interest in our outdoors!

Good for your Grandpa (RIP) for leaving you a tool to carry on his legacy!

Good for you for passing your exam!

Good for you for wanting to know the rules and asking an important question!

There is some great advise in this thread surrounded by a bit of BS....skip the "vegetable" BS and get to the "meat" importance of what you are asking and the answers are here.

Good luck in your first season!

Hey Kev

Have you applied for your minor's PAL yet? Once you get it, you will no longer need a PAL holder to supervise you. I am assuming you don't have it yet.

The whole thing is kind of tricky. When you get you minor's PAL, you can possess a firearm, but you can't own it until you are 18. But that doesn't mean you can't temporarily possess it for a REALLY long time. Does your dad have a PAL?

If your grampa left it to you, it should be in your possesion as soon as possible. I hunt with my dad's shotgun, and my son will inherit someday. This is a great thing.

If you need help, PM me. I'll help with whatever you need.

The CFSC does throw a lot at you fast. And for the haters out there, this is a tricky situation. Cut him some slack. This young fella shouldn't be getting flamed for asking questions, stop being dumb asses.
