Introduction
I'm not sure what the customary intro is on this board, so I will just go with what is customary on other boards I have belonged to.
My first fishing memory;
I was 4 years old, Grandpa and I had hiked down in to a small stream that was his special secret fishing hole. I had been practicing my fly casting in the pasture for a couple weeks and Grandpa felt I was ready. He had taken about 20' of fly line and put it on to a push button reel. Then came the tippet and finally a royal coachman (it was his go to fly). He loosened the drag and put the rod in my hand. It was an old beat up trout rod, but to me it became the most important one of all. I remember looking up at him and he said "well, whip that fly out there and let's see what happens". I was nervous about what to do if a fish actually took my fly, but Grandpa was right there so I knew he would make sure it was right. I did just what he said, whipped that royal coachman out there. It slapped down on the water with a thud. Nothing happened at first, I thought I had spooked all the fish out of the hole. Then suddenly I saw a flash coming toward my fly! And then a tug! It was a monster (in the eyes of a 4 yr old) size rainbow! I set the hook so hard I almost pulled that fish right out of the water. I finally got it on the bank. Grandpa gave it a little thump to the head and held it up for me to get a look at. Then he said, "I think you've got the gene girl! Now get that fly back out there and do it again. We're having trout for dinner."
From that moment on, I have been addicted to fishing. Doesn't matter to me what species, or style, I just love to fish. And yes, my addiction is rather out of control at this point in life, but there are worse things to be addicted to.
I currently live in Oregon, but will be moving to Edmonton in the next few months. I have a lot to learn about fishing in Alberta, but I'm glad I found this board. It's very similar to the main one here in Oregon. I'm looking forward to all the stories.
Tight lines to all!

Welcome, I'm sure the fishing will be different in some respects. Good news is that there are some pretty friendly anglers here that will help point you in the right direction. Plus you will have a whole province to explore.

I'm looking forward to exploring it. I will be bringing my boat up and plan on spending quite a bit of time in it.

Welcome to Alberta and AO. I am not overly familiar with fishing in Edmonton and area but overall in this province, you will find lots of awesome opportunities.

A future welcome to Alberta. Sorry to hear that you have CFD.(compulsive fishing disorder) As you know there is no cure for this malady so you will have to accept it. CFD will be a factor for the rest of your life. Just know that you are not alone. You have come to the right support group.

Welcome aboard ...... all fisherpeople are liars ...... so you are certain to hear lots and lots of stories. Most of them are fairy tales, but some are based loosely on reality.
Enjoy
I am in the Edmonton area - if you need a good lead to a nearby lake - many here are willing to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Hopefully I will be able to offer info once I get up there. Until then, I can only offer up my salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and Kokanee knowledge. Lol

Haha I can relate to the addiction - I only started in August 2013, but have proceeded to put most of my friends and family on the backburner for the glory of catching one more fish! I made myself a goal to catch every species of game fish in Alberta and only have 1 left so in my mind it's worth it, although my friends greatly disagree...lol. Welcome to Alberta! Gotta go for now, work done in 5 minutes and then off to the river I go :-)

Welcome to the fishing of alberta. You'll love it, but maybe not as many species as the mighty Columbia River by towns of Oregon. Any how pretty fun

Oregon doesn't have much in the way of ice fishing. Most of the fishing here in Portland is salmon/steelhead. But I'm excited to try out ice fishing. I've got a lot to learn, so be prepared for lots and lots of questions.

Well, I'm pretty rusty myself; I have all the equipment for ice fishing, but I have used it once in the last 10 years.
One thing I'll tell you is that, due to a lack of mobility like you have in the open water season, Alberta - like many states and provinces - allows you to use 2 lines while fishing in ice covered water (used to be 3, and some other regions still allow 3).
So there's that!
I will also say, that, despite the stereotype of a "cold" Canada, lake ice is often thinner or weaker - especially early or late in the season - than you might think: so be careful. Some lakes have natural springs or "gas" (naturally occurring) pockets that keep ice thin all winter. So stay safe!

Thanks for the advise. I'm sure I will do a few tag along trips before I just go out on the ice.
