Petzel. Like Drake said the most lumens you can afford, I like the models with the retractable diffuser.

Red face

Petzel and black dimond are the makes I like. If your using is to get to your hunting area buy one with a red light. Most have it, but animals have a hard time seeing the red light.

There are no headlamps that compare to the zebra lights.
Ligjtweight, 1090 lumen on turbo. They also make a dedicated red led headlamp for the early morning and late night walks out of the bush.
The one is 89 usd with free shipping the red led is 59 if I remember right.
Keep it together, rob.

I have a Black Diamond I'm quite happy with. It has both a spotlight (one large LED) and an array of 4 smaller LEDs for more of a "bubble" of light (can't think of a better description...). I'd think lots of brands have the spotlight/bubble combo these days, but it seemed revolutionary to me when I got it about a decade ago!

The guys from a waterfowl forum I read seem to like these:
http://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Waterp...6+LED+Headlamp

Cheap, and they say they work great. Cheap enough you could buy a couple and have a backup, but haven't heard any of them complain about needing one.

i got a bunch, six or 7 different ones, black diamond, petzel and some real cheap disposable ones too. some have multiple light/colors options. the red lens works great for those midnite pee runs out of the tent
keeping one in every vehicle, i use them at work when engineering, at home as a power outage kit.

for me one big deciding factor is batteries, if it runs AA or AAA or coin style, i try to take the one with me that I would have batteries for in different devices so i always have spares. walky talkies, gps, rangefinder, etc
the next is were the batteries are held, some are at the base of the skull with a connecting wire, others are in the lightset itself. if your wearing a helmet like quadding you sure dont want four AA batteries at the back of your head, so a compact front mount is better.
backpackers go light, if there is a chance youll loose it take a cheapo.
plus cheapo make superb childrens gifts, kids love them

I've been wearing the baseball caps with the lights built right into them. Marks work wear house sells them)
They are good for keeping rain off too. Easy on off button. You don't look like a miner either.

Surefire Maximus. It's not cheap, but worth every penny. Brightness is fully adjustable. Rechargeable. It comes with a 120v and 12v charger.

Petzel, MEC has some good models. Agree that batteries and compatibility with gps and walkie talkie is a consideration. I've bought low cost and and more expensive. For me it's hard to have too many as I seen to always be using them fishing, camping, hunting etc. great for picking dew worms off golf courses on rainy nights. I probably have 15 different ones. Princess auto, Wally mart, Costco all have cheapies. Have at least one or two good models.

Used a few different headlamps and IMHO Everready is the best. Love that it takes AA batteries that are stored on strap at back of head which distributes weight evenly so you forget your wearing them. AA baterries are the only way to go and last a long time. Easy on/off switch that you can use even with gloves on. Even in cold weather the adjustment cogs don't wear out or break. Very bright led with 2 settings. Have to admit I dont use the green or red light very often.
You can buy them at Home depot or other major stores so if you do have a problem. returning them is easy.
Also, they are about a 3rd the price of the brands I've looked at in large sports stores.

Have many different headlamps but SUREFIRE Maximus is the TOP. Pattern designed as a military tactical light for special forces. Continuously variable output from 1 to 500 lumen. Indestructible aluminum construction. Problems: price and availability.

Setting Output / Runtime -- White Light
High 500 lumens / 1.0 hours
Low 1 lumen / 70.0 hours
Weight w/Batteries 5.1 ounces
Batteries 1 Li-Ion rechargeable (included)

I have had a Petzel for about 5 years now, has worked great so far. Probably one of the best outdoor accessories I have ever bought.

www.princetontec.com/
Manufacturer of flashlights, head lamps, and other technical lighting sources for outdoor and scuba use.

Had a chance to use these headlamps last week, hands down the best headlamp I have ever used.
