Default Stinky Lab

I take my Lab out almost everyday,so everyday he is wet,and i notice he is starting to smell bad and that he has developed a rash under his chin and down his throat which is where the smell is. Is it from being wet all the time? Or is it from the water here in Red Deer? Any ideas and how to treat are welcome. Thanks

Yeah some of the water is pretty nasty smelling, probably better to wash him yourself now and then.

sounds like a hot spot. You can get some creme from the vet to take care of that. It can get really foul if left too long.

shave the infected area right down to see exactly what your dealing with then cleanse. most hot spots are due to alergy of one type or another, and made worst by continued biting, licking, scratching and moisture. if it is foul smelling the bacteria infection is deep and may take upwards of 4 weeks to get under control. Vet will probably prescribe vetricyn and a type of prednizone. I wouldnt mess with it, get him into a vet

^^^ Good advice. I also wash down my dogs after they go swimming, even if it is in fresh moving water. Ironically my lab is a BIG baby and whines & cry's whenever she gets a bath or "shower" but she will swim in any water she can until she's so tires she will pass out?? I never could figure that out. lol

I had something that looked like that on the old black lab, it happened just after getting him a nylon collar, went all the way around his neck. That was one ugly mess. Felt sorry for him, it had to be some sore. Never had it on any of the other dogs, I can't say for sure, it had anything to do with that collar, but, I've always had leather collars on all the dogs. It just looked like it had rubbed/cut the hair and skin, and at the time I thought it may have been possible that was at least part of the cause, along with something that maybe got on to the collar. Vet was rather taken aback by it too, didn't really have an explanation for it , either.

I swim my lab every day, and most days it is in a nearby pond that is not the freshest around. When I get him home, I rinse him thoroughly with the garden hose, collars off, and towel dry. No problems so far. I also use an ear cleanser after he swims because water dogs can be prone to ear infections.

Pixel is right, get him to a vet and get it looked after.

My maniac had that too,but in his crotch, the Vet said it was from the water he swam in.Seemed odd because it was a crystal lake but I put the salve on him and it went away. Some microbe thing in the water.

Three Mile Bend is a spot that you should avoid. Talked to many people with ear infections in their Labs. You probably have a bit of leash chaffing allowing the bacteria infested water to penetrate the skin.

Talk to the older gentleman on the north end around 75th and Gaetz Ave on the east side. Half the price of the yuppie vets and familiar with what you are dealing with.

No doubt you with have ear infection as well so be sure to check that. It can cause serious and permanent damage.
