Fred Bear remembered???

Has anyone been influenced by the legendary Fred Bear?

Maybe shoulda put this under Archery discussion......oh well...its still hunting

One of my favourite legends! I shoot only a recurve bow and he is the guy who started me on that.

Proving once again.....You dont NEED thousands of dollars worth of modern stuff to hunt....

Fred Bear is considered the father of modern Archery.
He was also the reason Ii originally got into archery.
He was responsible for more advances and held the patents on more archery inventions than anybody else, but did not demand royalties form anyone, simply inventing for the good of archery itself.

No, but one tends to buy thousands of dollars worth of equipment for the fun of it!
Even a modern recurve or flat bow can add up to big money however, once one gets all set up, or you could build a flat bow, and mke the string and arrows and heads, yes.
many do that for the love of doing it - I prefer to shoot my bows not build them, however.

Very true....
I was just trying to make a point of need vs want.
I'm not without guilt of over buying stuff myself.
But watching and learning from people like Fred Bear....keeps me in check and reminds me of the luv of the outdoors hunting over the aquisition of stuff.
I've only hunted with a compound bow.....but re-watchn ole Fred makes me want to try a recurve this year.

I watched him on the North American sportsman ( I think that was the show) kill his elephant and his Admiralty Island bear when I was 12, and that was all I needed!
traded my Iver Johnson SXS ( with Dad's permission, mind you!) for a Fred Bear deer slayer, and pile of arrows, shafts, fl etching burner, tapering tools,and a bunch of other stuff and away I went to slay the mighty rabbit and woodchuck!
Crap, I think I went for about 10 years without a knocking point on my bow!!
I did pretty well with it , as well, but not nearly so well as when I got some lessons from a true expert.
Got into a pile of different head, shafts, bows, etc, and have come full circle back to Zwickeys for the last 15 years or so.
Many thousands of arrows and years later, i still love the recurve and long bows!

Hey Cat.....
have you tried in flight bird hunting with a bow?.....now that seems pretty tricky and very skillfull.

Yup, I have killed a few geese when I was younger, my son is on video a few years back and came within inches of taking a rooster and a chuker, but so far he's still bating zip - maybe next year!
The chuker was a crossing shot, and was pretty cool to see.

i've always liked reading about fred bear, and the other old school legends. My grand father was president of the alabama state archery assc in the late 50's, early 60's. He was big buddies with Howard hill. had a tonne of great howard hill, and a few fred bear stories. especially enjoyed the howard hill stories. i couldn't get enough of them, they where great. some might of even been true!!


here's a picture of legend.........in my mind anyway.

my grand father with alabama white tail(huge eh?). taken late 50's??. he loved that "tote goat" and still rode it until the late 90's.

I've always wanted to try an inflight bird shot but never had the gumpshin to actually pull the trigger.
I have always thought that hitting a bird in flight with a bow is the ultimate marksmanship....and a proven pro shooter

Fred bear taught me how to hunt and shoot a bow, sort of. I started bowhunting in 1973 while living in the red deer area, I didn't know anyone else that bowhunted , so the Fred Bear archers bible, became my instructor. I still remember one of the lessons I learned, if you are shooting without sights and tend to miss high, you most likely are not picking a spot on the critter.
