Lesser slave lake... Shaws point...

Does anyone have experience with Shaws point?

I'm planning a fishing/camping trip for roughly may or june 2013 with a buddy of mine. From what I gather shaws point is a good location to fish for walleye and jack.

We're looking at a 2-3 day excursion.

Are there any tips or hints to make this a successful venture?

How is the campground next to it? We are looking at Tenting it. Are there better campgrounds or fishing locations?

We will be using a 14 foot extra wide aluminum fishing boat with a 20 hp outboard. Traveling to spots in the lake will not be much of an issue.

For a little extra $$ you can rent trailers/cabins at the Shaws point resort. But might be all booked up by now. Also, keep in mind that part of the lake near there is closed until mid to late June (not directly off the point but the area around the inlet stream, check the regs for full details). The Walleye fishing is good there and off the point last couple weeks of June and all July. Bring jigs and lots of frozen minnows and find 5-10 ft. of water or just go to where all the boats are, there will be lots of them

Most people jig, never seen much trolling going on around there because there are so many boats

Book at Hilliards Bay Campground instead...alot nicer and cheaper...imo

As mentioned, campgrounds are full that time of year, find the "grouped up boats" and go fishin !!!

I've been going there every year since I was in the womb.

I like it there.

Fishing is good straight out from the second marina. Pulled my PB walleye out of there this year, also a few pike too

When I used to live in Slave Lake I liked going to 9 mile point, had fewer people there, would fish right behind the island sheltering the cabins the water got a little deeper there and had fairly good luck.

Lots of crown land for camping up there. Target the other lakes ip there. Some very nice walleye up in those lakes. Find twelve feet of water and you'lll catch fish.

"WATCH THE WEATHER" you can get some nasty waves on that lake in a big hurry. Fished the golden in the early days, I have had to drive between the waves with a 18' deep "V" four miles of hell. so be careful.

Try that in a 14' 25 horse standard hull...

Waves were coming over the hull... Scary ass ****. Only time I've ever felt the need to wear a life jacket while on a boat...

Insane haha, but it does take a hell of a lot to capsize a boat, and as long as your smart, attentive, and cautious and know what your boat can handle you will be alright.

Slave is a good lake, but I definitely think there are better lakes.

The walleye fishing is great, but constant 2-3 lbers haven't caught anything glorious out of there. Plus it's always so packed and the lake is absolutely massive and it would take hours upon hours to find a secluded honey hole that would produce 8+ lbers in my opinion.

That's because in Slave, they move around quiet a bit.

My PB from there was 10lbs and caught out front of devonshire beach, my dads was 8lbs and caught off north shore. Have heard of quiet a few 5-8lbs coming out of the river below the weir when I was a gaffer.

I caught a 5 lb walleye right off Shaws Point this past July!

But to the OP, go to Hilliards - Shaws Point is horribly overpriced. Its at least 5 dollars more per night than at Hilliards for power sites. And a burger, fries and a coke will run you $15.00 at the cafeteria.

Or just buy groceries and eat like kings every on the old Coleman.

Seriously though at OP if your running a 14ft 20 horse don't plan on exploring slave more than where you are staying, the weather there along with the wind can change in a second. You will be in for a shock.

Thanks for the excellent advice and tips folks.

My buddy and I are looking at tenting it. Neither of us have a tent trailer, or RV, etc.

The plan is to head out on a Wed or Thurs and fish Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun and head back on Sunday.

We may entertain the idea of borrowing or renting a tent trailer for this trip.

We plan to stay close to our launch point. We're not interested in venturing out too far with how quick conditions can change.

Right now I'm just doing the preliminary research and gatherring information!

go to hillards just down the road, they have great self check in and free fire wood, plus a good launch and fish cleaning area, power. wife and I had a great time here this past summer, wanted to fish the tourny there this year but got caught up in work. get your ice at shaws point and marvel at the huge RV's and nice boats, there is a fee to launch at shaws as well, so hillards is your best bet, Shaw's was kind of a funny place to visit as it was like a gated community with golf carts zipping around and trailers parked extremely close together. not my type of place. Hillards is very safe as well, the fish cops patrol the park not only for poachers and such but also keep the peace mostly on weekends as the beach and launch get busy. Lesser Slave can get sporty in a hurry, but as long as you know when its time to get off the water you'll be fine,

It appears the general consensus is Hillard's Campground. I'm not a big fan of poshing it up while camping. I like my tent. I could do a tent trailer, however if I'm just looking for a spot to spend the night and set up camp... a tent is good by me!

We are looking at doing a Wed to Sunday or Thurs to Sunday trip. Get a few days in before the masses descend upon us. hahaha

I wish there was a launch at Martin River. Diamond Willow campsite on that side had one, but from what I understand its no longer open to the public.
