I'm sure most that have posted know more than I about this, but you may consider starting out with a Mosin Nagant. Ammo is cheap and i've purchased thousands of rounds from canadian tire. Range can hit 1000 yds, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dQpY9muGj8 and if you are just looking for something that you can learn the intricacies of LRS without costing a ton, i suspect it may work well for you.
You'll probably be able to afford the .308 or 300 mag at the end of it with all the money you'll save.

Hi Frickenchicken

hey 7mm Mag is how I would go(second hand) with scope and BDC on scope

bullet cost 35$ (super x )

175grain better wind value(Canadian Tire or Walmart)

I follow and post in Long Range hunting with Len Backus n he still uses his 7mm Mag

if your into a lot of long range hunting or competition shooting then u should up grade but if your just plinking have fun

here is a chart that tell the effective range(Moose was 975yds)

the more you shoot the better u get (they have schools if you want here too)

try some of the suggestions

as all ways this is

Food for Thought

When considering a long range "budget" cartridge, I would consider the availability of reasonable cost rifles suitable for target use, the available of factory ammunition suitable for target use, the cost per round, barrel life, how quickly the barrel heats up, and recoil. The 308win does quite well on all counts, and if you don't reload, it is likely the best choice. If you do reload, cartridges like the 7mm-08 and 260rem are also great choices. I would avoid the Magnum cartridges, because they do poorly on most of the criteria that I would use to choose a cartridge. The magnums cost more to shoot, there is not a lot of suitable factory target loads compared to the 308win, the barrels heat up quicker, the barrel life is much shorter, and the recoil is greater.
