Deer Gun - .270 win

Looking at purchasing a new rifle specifically for deer and .270/.280 is my preferred caliber choice.

Anyone have any suggestions? Lightweight is key and not wood stock.

I was thinking the sako 85 finnlight or sako a7, but i do know of the ejection issues that come with the 85s.

T3x lightweight Tikka, and invest heavy in mounts and optics.

No fly’s on either cartridge, if you are a factory fodder flogger, look more towards the .270Win. Not that 7mm REM Express (280 REM) is that hard to find, just it’s that 1/2 a degree further towards obscure, than it’s cousin the .270 Win.

Talleys if you want to keep things on the light side but there's lots of options.

Sako A7 is disco'd but maybe you're thinking used. Do yourself a favor if you're contemplating going a step up from Tikka towards Sako pricing. As sns2 mentioned the Christensen Mesa is an excellent rifle and $5 - 600 lower than the Sako Finnlight with a better stock.

Fyi Tikka/Sakos will be detach mag vs drop plate mag if you have a preference.

Kimber makes a nice rifle as well but they are a little tighter chambers for sure.

I have have no hesitation in recommending a Christensen Mesa or a bit cheaper the Tikka T3X.

Lotsa nice guns out there.

270 is strychnine to deer.

I feel that they ask too much for the Sako 85s.

In that price range have a look at the new Weatherby Lightweight rifle. As accurate as the Sako, better action and stock. Also, a whole bunch lighter than the Sako. I have the earlier 257 Weatherby Ultra Light in LH. Great shooting gun, will do .25 at 100 for 3 shots. The only Sako I own now are pre Beretta ownership.

Top it with a Swaro Z3 4-12x44 with the BRH reticle in Talleys and you will be all in with a full mag and sling, at a tad over 6 Lbs.

I've had great success with my sako and i love the action on it but caught me by surprise a few items with some issues in the field.

Tikka always nice choice as it doesn't break the bank $$$

I have never had anything but good luck with all my Sakos of which there have been more than a few over the years. In fact, I even had two Finnlights in 270 Win, of which there were no ejection issues. The price increases and the potential danger of the ejection issues would just make me look elsewhere or buy used from a trustworthy seller. Buying used is always wise.

I ask for your budget, as it will help guys give you reasonable suggestions.

Sako's are pretty tough right now especially in .270 but i will keep looking.

I have a Seiko 85 in270 win Left Hand had ejection problems when I first bought it got different scope rings no issues since then.

Very happy with my Tikka t3 Lite stainless .270 win. It shoots under an inch groups of three with factory rounds, the action is very smooth, etc. All the good things people say about them are true in my experience, and the bad things they say are mostly aesthetic. I have the Sako optilock rings and bases with the plastic inserts. Very solid setup, doesn't require any lapping, etc., although quite expensive as rings/bases go.

I wonder if its my rings, i do have sako rings so you'd think that couldn't possibly be the issue?

I have Seiko Rings also just went up a different size I think they make three sizes

The Sakos that have ejection issues are due to the angle it is ejecting the case. For some reason they don't all eject at the same angle, don't know whether it is cartridge specific or just the erector. The case hits the scope and falls back into the action. The cure has often been higher rings for more clearance for the brass to get out. Others were fixed by working on or replacing the ejector, which is actually the proper fix.

Decided on .270 Sako 85 finnlight, took awhile to find as stock issues are low as most of you are aware.

Any suggestions on a scope? I will need something that will be good for low light and long range 400-500 yards.

I've been hunting with a Browning A Bolt II for years, never had a problem never used more than one round to take an animal. It wears a Bushnell Elite 4500, I keep it zeroed for 200 yards. It likes a diet of 140 grain BTSP Customs. Smooth action and the weight is very reasonable.

The Browning X-Bolt Composite is a great rifle with some various stock camo patterns available, love the way mine shoots and carries. Very smooth bolt action. I kinda wish I would have got it in a .308 but the .270 is getting it done as well.

The best thing to do, especially when buying a light weight rifle is shoulder it. A bad fit is a nightmare to try and shoot accurately. Not sure if it's just me, or somehow the less weight the worse it gets if it doesn't fit right. I've spent some real good money learning this lesson.

I have a Tikka T3 with a Leopold vx3 4.5 to 14 in 270(wsm). It is my first choice when I grab a gun. It's been used on 2 antelope, 3 elk and more deer than I can remember. Used it sub 100 yards, out to 400. Matched with 140gr tsx or ttsx, whatever it gets aimed at hits the ground shortly after. It is very good on not damaging meat when you stay away from shoulders.

I have a browning x-bolt speed with a muzzle brake chambered in the 280 Ackley and love it. Very accurate and has enough power for moose and elk, a wide range of bullet weights also. If you’re a reloader, check out this cartridge.

Swarovski Z3 3-9×36

Or

Leupold VX3 2-8×36
