Default Thoughts on a compact scope for a 22

So I put a new Archangel stock on my son's Remington 597. So far we really like it with being able to adjust it ect...
I put a cheapo Bass Pro red-dot sight on it and I am thinking that may have been a mistake. We like the looks of the little scope but the dot is not very bright at all. Might make it tough in the gopher patch. I am going to put a new battery in it to see if that works, but I may look to replace it as well.

What are some ideas for a compact 22 scope, not interested in a traditional 3-9x40 type scope. Not wanting to spend more than $150.

Thanks for looking!

Leupold used to make a nice compact scope (2x7). I have it on my 22-410. Bought it used. Works very well and does not look out of place. You could try look for a good used one.

I know it's more than $150 but I put a Leupold 2-7 rimfire on my sons 10/22. It has a fine reticle and is just a great little scope.

Default Yup another Leupold vote

The old adage you can buy once or keeping moving up with multiple purchases. I put 2-7 on several 22 and 22 mags when I worked at WSS and got employee discount but I have also found a few used ones for not much more than you are planning to spend for the Anshutz , a trombone etc.

Default Nikon p22

I have a Leupold 2-7 x28 rimfire scope that I really like. It might not have the look you want plus it's more than $150.

Nikon makes a 2-7 x32 with exposed turrets that give it a bit of a tactical look. It might be more of a match for your 22. It goes for about $200

If you'd like a better red dot, the bushnell TRS-25 at $125 is tough to beat for value.

I bought a new scope for another 22 a few weeks back. Ended up getting a Nikon EFR 3-9x40. It would be exactly what the OP said he didn't want. Anyway, I got it at P&D in Edmonton. P&D had the Nikon p-22 in stock when I was shopping. Bass Pro had it as well.
