Mossberg 500 combo...I bought one of them with 3 barrels and chokes in camo..24 inch rifled slug barrel with cantilever mount,26 and 28 inch barrels with screw in chokes, 4 chokes included as well as a spare set of ilum sites...all 4 $430.00 shipping extra. Very utilitarian but when I pull the trigger the damn thing goes BANG every time...

Ruger mini 14 or 30....You like chasing brass? Every time you fire you have to dig in the friggen snow bank to find it. Buy a good quality .223 rifle like the vanguard s2 as mentioned above.Or even a rem sps model will work.

SKS....once again if you like chasing brass and love 3 inch groups and rudimentary sights...not much of a varmint rifle unless you like the spray and pray technique.Take the extra money from buying the SKS and invest it in a good quality bolt rifle and you will be $ ahead and way happier.
I shouldered a Savage Mark II BTVSS at P&D when I took my RPAL course a few weeks ago, that is definitely on my list. So comfortable and balanced even on the shoulder standing. Are you the guy I saw there just drooling but you wanted the blue one? If that was you we chatted about them for a bit. I think that will be my first rifle for this spring for gopher stew.

I saw a Marlin L7SY at Wholesale Sports online for $349.00 which is pillar bedded with a 22" barrel put a &300.00 good scope on it in .308 and that would be a nice $650.00 rifle ready for tweaking! too bad they do not make a .223!

A bedded bolt action in .223 with good glass is a must for cheap ammo wise target practice and yotes.

The Mossberg 500 with three barrels cannot be beat for a bargain.

It's ot working too well.
There will e only one semi in that bunch, an 1100 that was my father's trap gun.
I have no use for a semi auto rifle be it a rim fire or center fire, but I know the are popular.

Yes semi auto's are just ammo eaters with less accuracy essentially but I would like a semi auto shotgun and a mini 14 down the road.

Smile Cost and quality

Let's be careful here high price does not always equal high quality. All I care about is how accurate is the rifle. There are not all that many differences in guns to warrant the large price differences.

I own most of the guns on the list, the SKS is an excellent example of a very good full bore semi auto that is cheap to soot but mine at least is not very accurate. The Savage 243, 223 I have with upgraded triggers and Bushnell scopes shoot sub moa.

The ruger 10/22 with a good scope is very accurate and my wife and kids love it.

Quality counts for sure, the key IMO is being able to recognize it.

Quality always over quantity.

I vote nothing over $700. But it all depends on what your income is like. I could never drop $500 on a scope, but that's me.

Default My $0.02

Sometimes quantity has a quality of its own.
There is always time to chase that one special gun.

I think quality every time. Price, though, doesn't always directly equate with quality. Sako builds a good gun, but it is questionable whether it is worth twice the price of a Winchester, Ruger or even a Remington. Blazers, too, beautiful piece of workmanship, but worth the money? Maybe I'm wrong but if so then I guess the next question would be at what price is the quality suitable?

Wise words. Don't rush out to buy a gun as a first just because you got your licence. In today's market, I would recommend a gently used Husqvarna.

Yes I really like the Savage .22lr rifles I think I may be leaning on the Mark II BRJ because I want to add a Harris bipod, but that BEV is the most ergonomic and comfortable rifle I have ever shouldered. I also like the BTVSS.

Most game animals are shot between 50-150 yards depending on terrain

a 150 gr. .308 bullet at 2800 fps does the same job from a $200 gun or a $10,000 gun the deer wouldn't know the difference

Optics are the key, I think you should spend as much money on optics as got do on the rifle your putting it on.

This is true, but some people like shooting and owning expensive guns as well , not that they kill any better than a cheap gun, they just like them.
Pretty much the same as hot rods, fancy trucks, bikes , sports cars, etc.

How about quality with the bolt on upgrades. Well worth the cost. We're still talking guns right...
