Only One Rifle
far be it for me to poke a stick in a hornets nest but imagine if one day we were told that we could only have one rifle, what would you pick and why.
Also how much ammo would you want or need.

only one rifle
I would have to say my .257 weatherby mag. Bar none the best shooting gun i own. i couldnt load bullets that shoot as good as the factory 100 gr sp that weatherby makes. As far as how many bullets i would need, thats tough to say i am only 27 years old, i hope alot.

A 7mmstw for deer to elk to bear, and I would need a few thousand rounds to last until I am done hunting.I could use more, but I would need at least few thousand rounds to be able to get in regular practise.

If such a thing happened, you'd see a lot of firearms mistriously disappear...
As for my choice, a 30-06 or a 6.5.

My Remington 30.06 because it means alot to me then just to have a top of the line gun just because pros use it and the make or the cost.
It was my first centerfire and was given to me by my dad so Id pick that one.
Also it will drop anything that I hunt in its tracks if I can place the shot.
As for ammo ALOT!!!

My .300 Ultra Mag with enough reloading supplies to keep the 200 grain Accubonds flying for a LONG time. From deer to bison to keep me fed; and enough gun for any predator in North America; to keep me from becoming food....no problem.

If only one, I guess I'll be the odd man out and say my Sako 22lr. It would cover the most with the least. If I could have two it would be the 22 and my Featherweight 06. If it could be three, I would add my model 7 custom in 223Rem.................and the list could go on .

Good enough to take anything in this province, wide selection of ammo (55-220 gr), every bullet imaginable and available everywhere (try that with some calibers), managable recoil and virtually every gun manufacturer makes their products in it. Been around forever for a reason just like the venerable old 30-30.

Not that I'm only allowed one rifle but I recently moved from manitoba to Surrey, BC and before I left Mb I sold all my rifles (9) except I kept my winchester model 70 in 30-06. I also brought enough ammo to last me the rest of my life. including 125, 165, 180,220 gr ammo.

Mine would be my Mod 70 in 308 Norma Mag, can load it up, or down to do what it needs to do. As for how many rounds, enough lead, primmers and powder to not have to worry about it!~

Would have to be my Rem 700 in .30-06 with a healthy supply of 165 grain Barnes TSX's and IMR 4350. In my opinion short of grizzly's or brown bears there is nothing I would feel under gunned with in this country!

vote for the .338
I would have to choose the .338 win mag with a thousand rounds of ammo!
This pea-shooter is responsible for more one shot kills in my arsenal than any fo the other guns combined. Flat shooting and enough energy for anything in North America!

bolt action .22 LR - cheap, accurate, kills small tasty critters that are more numerous than large tasty critters.
In my cast that would be my Mossberg US 44

a 12 gauge would be by far the most "useful"
This is really dependent upon where you live/hunt
I'd choose something like a .25 wssm - if it lasts that long. I have to read more into this round.
And I hate these posts because then I have to choose just one!!!!
If I could only keep one it would be a O/U with iron sights - a .30-06 and a 12 gauge. Okay I cheated!
One rifle and shotgun or just one rifle? ahha ok just for rifles I'd keep a 338 Federal or something - a good brush gun - maybe a 45-70

I'd take a Savage 24, 30/30, 12ga. combo.
5 lbs of H4895, and about 1000, 165gr. pointed bullets.
1000rnds of 2-3/4" 1-1/8oz #6's
500 rnds of 2-3/4" 1-1/4oz #4's
500 rnds of 3" 1-5/8oz #2's
200 rnds of 1oz slugs

I would go with my fathers 30/30 winchester. The reason I would choose this rifle is because my father bought it for my grandfather after his house burned. I also shot my first moose with it. Mostly sentimental value I guess.

A good quality combination gun is the best you can do with the 1 gun scenario.
For example, a used $450, 30-30/20 gauge savage 24v (they sell fast!) allows the following:
deer/moose/elk out to 200 yds with leverevolution bullets.
deer/moose/elk in heavy brush with a slug.
geese/ducks/flying things with the shotgun
rabbit/grouse/small game up to 40 yds using a hammond game getter (which somewhat duplicates what a .22 lr will do.)
A big bonus with this gun is it breaks down to a small package, allowing easy storage.
The savages are reliable, durable, not that heavy and accurate.
Now if you don't care for the savage 24v, CZ/Brno's are available (i.e. 308/12gauge) for about 2x the money.
Personally, I'd stick with the savage and a low powered scope.
And of course, a small mountain of ammo.
