I grew up on the West Coast and enjoyed what I believe to be the final days of the freshwater salmon sport fishery there in the early 2000's. I've resigned myself to the fact that my daughter, 1y/o right now, will never catch a Canadian salmon. I'll likely be taking her to Alaska to catch salmon, and even that isn't guaranteed anymore.
It seems more and more that governments are on a mission to "manage to zero" while also pandering to certain other groups who have purely selfish motives driven by a here and now perspective fueled by perceived entitlement with no thought to conservation or other affected groups.
This seems prevalent across the board, not just with fishing but also wildlife and forestry management. Such policies are one of the many reasons I left BC and will never move back. Alberta is also facing similar battles and the future is uncertain with respect to fishing and hunting here as well.
