7mm rem mag
Just wondering if 7mm is a overall good cartridge. I'm looking for a caliber that is a good at long range(500-800 yds) and has the knock down power for moose and what not.

Good selection of bullets for the handloader and a large array of ammo to be found in a small town in case something happens and you need to buy more.
The recoil is generally manageable for most folks with the addition of a good pad and it can do the job on a variety of game at a variety of distances.
I love mine in case you couldn't tell.

What's your problem? Legs broke? 7MM is a great caliber, but I don't think anybody with any ethics would attempt an 800 yd. shot.

I've used a 7mm Rem. for 35 plus years now...have taken countless animals with it , after working up some great handloads,,,have no idea what it does at 500-800 yards....In hindsight , that;s probably a good thing ( for when I was younger)

ha ha no doubt... i dont think many people actually realize how far that is and how many factors come into affect into a shot that far... 800 yds is a long ways for a bullet to travel... and unless uve been trained or spent countless hours at the range its quite an unlikely shot..

New guy here. Why would you want to shoot 500-800 yds? Are you a class 1 sniper and just practicing? B

we got a 1000 yard challenge coming up here on AO.
all the guys that can are going to take lessons from all the guys that talk!
if i can i'm going to try to come out for it, i figure a little humble pie will go well with my tag soup this year

Here we go again ethical shooting, don't shoot over 200 yards or it will offend everyone, I hope these aren't the same guys who are saying using a 223 or 22-250 is unethical, because at 200 yards or less, it is a dead deer with proper shot placement.
Moose are hard to hit a 500 yards with a 7mm Rem Mag, they have vital zone,, only the size of a small car.
You better practice if you are shooting at these ranges, many don't, thus the backlash when you speak of 500 yards plus.

Well...just shot a moose this fall at 175 yards, trust me , his vitals weren't the size of a small car, but keeping telling everyone how well you can shoot and carry on.....just said , I don;t shoot that far...no backlash...Good Luck!!

Most critics of long range hunting don't know or have never seen real long range hunting. Most have a terrible misconception about it and then run their yaps about how it is not this or that and that thier way of hunting is "real hunting". Those that can do and those that can't bitch.

I've never shot out to 800yards on paper, But i do practice out to 500, 600Yards almost every weekend its not -20. Still i keep my max hunting range to 400 yards because i shoot a 30.06. Plus wind doesn't affect my bullet much at that range. And after all the practice and reloading and punching holes, IF I CAN'T GET STILL I DON'T SHOOT. If the animal is moving i don't shoot. 800yards is a long way on paper let alone at game. If guys can do it ethicaly, more power to them but i can't.lol And a 8'' gong at 200yards don't sound hard to hit guys? Or is it a " had to be there type of thing"?

7 mm mag
Have been shooting the "7" for 35 years or more. Good all- around gun for big game unless you are scared of a little kick. It can git out there and tag them with some hitting power if they are reloaded right. Longest shot on a ram -330 yds; on elk -480 yds; moose-550 yds("stupid kid"-had to follow him 2 miles to finally kill him) mule deer-580 yds(quick shot "instinct" no thinking, would not do again) Almost all of the rest were shot under 200 yds. Nothing beats steady target practice .

I don't feel that the original question asked for opinions on the ethics of shooting game at 800 yrds. The question is can a 7mm do it, I believe everyone will agree that the cartridge if fully capable of a kill shot at that range. It is a flat shooting and very powerful caliber.
I know my rifle shoots much better then I do and I only use a .303, a 7mm can do what you are asking and if you are capable of that same caliber of shooting my hat is off to you sir.

7mm is one of the best all around cartridges. Without getting into ethics or morality (because everyones are different), next time you are out in the field get a feel for just how far half a kilometer is and try to imagine consistently hitting a target at that range.

I never felt undergunned with a 7mm rem mag. Great calibre. And it will do those long range shots you are asking about.

800 yds ehhh..... the farthest i have ever shot was 925 yrds. with a rifle that was specially built for that kind of shooting with a scope for those kindof distances and if it was'nt for my cousin who has spent alot of time learning how to do this kind of shooting setting up the shot i would have flat out missed. I am confident out to 500 yds. max but what the boys at Best of the West don't tell you is all the homework that went into making those shots happen. They make it seem like all you do is get a Huskamaw scope and bolt it on and dial her up to the range the target is and pull the trigger.
The drop is the easy part to figure but its doping the wind to figure out the drift thats the hard part. Even if you go high tech with hand held computers and ballistics programs it still is a crap shoot to a certain extent. I am not saying it can't be done just that you need to do your homework and do alot of practice to make a shot at 800 yds.
