Default twist rate

This may sound like dumb question,I'm trying to find out if 1:9 is faster than 1:12 twist rate or the other way around.I'm want to buy ammo for my .223 and on the back of the box it says recommended for 1:9 twist rate or slower. Thanks

One revolution in 9 inches is a faster twist than one revolution in 12 inches.

What weight in grains is your ammo? 50? 55? 69?

Your 1 in 12 twist rate is good for bullets up to 60 grains and will work with your 45gr HP ammo.

A faster twist, such as a 1 in 9 is good for bullets up to 69 grains and sometimes 75 grain bullets.

How far do you intend to be shooting out to? I know that with the standard M-16A4 carrys a 1:7 rate of twist shooting the ss109 62 grain bullet. That combination allows the penetration of a steel helmet at 600meters. The origional m16-s had a rate of twist around 1:14. this slow rate led impressive exit wounds in Vietnam. Anyways the US Army uses that combination to shoot out to 300m accurately and the USMC uses it to shoot out to 500m, with Iron sights. Anything past 500 and the large portion of how well your shot is relies upon you the shooter. Now if you know anything about the government and the military, everything they buy is from the lowest bidder, so if you match yourself up with some premium ammo, you should be able to shoot to 500 with the .223/5.56 without a problem.
